Accommodation near the Mashantucket Pequot Museum
I need a few days break and have always wanted to visit the American Indian Museum.
I want to do that and otherwise eat well and spend a lot of time near a good indoor pool. In searching it seems that the MGM Grand at the casino is the most comfortable choice, however I loathe casinos and their vibe. Does anyone have first hand knowledge of what it is like to stay at this hotel for the purpose I describe? Or a better idea? Good indoor pool is a must. I am recovering from serious illness and know a pool would be restorative. Any help would be appreciated. |
There is an article in today's Boston Globe about staying ther ( or the other one) without gambling.
Mystic, Stonington, and Essex all have lodging and are nearby. |
The Museum is totally worth a visit. Check their hours/days of operation -- we were caught once trying to visit on the wrong day (a Wednesday, I think).
The MGM lobby does have a smallish area of slot machines and blackjack tables and such, but is connected by a longish passageway to Foxwoods, so you can avoid the main part of the casino (which is truly huge). So it has much less ``vibe'' than the casino part -- not dark, no smoke that I can recall -- but might still be enough jingly lights to annoy you. Arranged around MGM lobby area are upscale shops and restaurants -- you can definitely find something good to eat. We enjoyed our meals at the 50's-style diner and the NY-style steakhouse. You can also walk over to Foxwoods to find more restaurants. I don't recall there being an indoor pool at the MGM (there was an outdoor one) -- you might want to check that. |
thanks. I realize that the indoor pools are at some of the other hotels, so that might make a difference in terms of staying more out of the fray.
The Globe article is helpful, thanks. The lodgings in the nearby towns are limited in terms of decent pools, but I will keep looking. I love Stonington. |
That museum is a gem. I'm assuming you are going this time of the year, there is a wonderful lobster place nearby but I think it closes for the winter. Just in case it's called Abbotts.

Thanks; I am hoping to go before Thanksgiving.

Note that the museum is closed on Sunday except during summer.
We thought it was surprisingly light on artifacts, but the recreated village is stunning. Watch the movie as well. I'd feared it would be like a History Channel feature, but the production values are good and the story moving. |
Two Trees Inn at Foxwoods is not attached to the casino, is across the road, has a heated indoor pool and is very close to the museum. Rates for mid November are very reasonable, if you sign up for their rewards card you might get a better rate too.

emalloy, that is helpful. I didn't really picture that correctly but it sounds worth looking into.
