Accommodation/Hana
 

We have looked at a b&b called (Cliff's Edge)which is close to Pa'ia on the two days we're going to Hana but on the map it looks like we'd leave Kihei and be in Pa'ia area within an hr. Then if you went to Hana, you'd have to go back to b&b and then in the morning (because they have 2 nights min.)go back on the same road (which people say is less than perfect). I'm not sure about the location of this place and wonder if we should look closer to Hana for an accommodation. Is it possible to just go without a reservation and be able to find a place?

If you want to have several days in and around Hana, book yourself a place in Hana -- otherwise, you'll be doing _lots_ of driving:

Yes, make an advance reservation for Hana (not a lot of vacation rentals there).

You might find a place in Hana without a reservation, but I wouldn't chance it. When we go for an overnighter we always have to book the place in advance. I have tried to find accommodations on short notice when we have visitors, ususally with no luck.

I thought I wrote a response to your first post asking about Cliff's Edge, but I guess it did not post. This B&B is in Huelo, not Pa`ia. It is not close to Hana--you will be 1.5 hours from Hana Town, 2 hrs at least to Kipahulu, if you are thinking abotu going to `Oheo. And it is not really close to Pa`ia either. It is 15-20 miles from Pa`ia, and it will take you at least a half hour to get to Pa`ia Town. If you want to spend the night there, know that while you will have a lot of dining options in Pa`ia and Ha`iku, you will be at least a half hour away.

It looks like a neat place if you really want to get away from everything, but not really a good point from which to explore east Maui, unless you are planning simple day trip to Hana.

The area around Hana is so serene you will wish you didn't have to drive back to Pa'ia. Definitely spend at least one night there. Don't know your price range, but here is one cottage I walked past many times on the way to our rental, and made a mental note to stay here next time:

The only drawback to Hana is you are very limited in dining options. We brought our food with us and cooked in. We only ate dinner out and that was at the beautiful Hotel Hana-Maui.

We spent 10 days in Maui in Sept. Moved to three different locations. Napili, Central Maui, and Up Country. By far our favorite was Napili. We also drove to Hana, which was our 2nd time. I personally, would not want to spend a night in Hana, to me, there is just not enough there. I love Pi'ai, and other little towns in upcounty much better than Hana. I would definitely look closer to Hana. We booked a cottage on Hana Bay a few years ago for a few nights and loved it.

There is MUCH to do in Hana and the surrounding area if you are ready for diving into nature, doing some hiking, playing and overall exploring. ((R))
