I believe solitary confinement falls under the category of cruel and unusual (although not really unusual) treatment. It is barbaric. And used often on those in prison who are mentally unbalanced to begin with.

There are many days when I wish I could chuck my job as a paperwork RN and work on something like prison reform. Lock em up, throw away the key and "they deserve it" does not work for me.

Yes, but how did they become sociopaths and psychopaths? It's the whole nature/nurture thing. I have no particular expertise in this area but my gut tells me its a combination.

Someone who has already been sentenced to life w/o parole and knows he is going to kill himself regardless of the outcome.
