A weekend escape around cooperstown ny

We (2 aduts) plan a weekend escape from NYC to Cooperstown NY. Other than the hall of baseball fame, which my partner wishes to visit, any ideas for interesting things to do?

The Cooperstown museum on the edge of town is excellent. It has a farm/village life museum, a fine arts museum focused on NY State art, and the Thaw Collection of American Indian Art, the first Native American art that I have ever seen displayed as _art_, not anthropology or ethnography. It will knock your socks off.

Of course, I would say you should take in an opera at Glimmerglas or at least tour the facility.

Lots of pretty drives.

Ommegang Brewery is in Cooperstown--they make wonderful craft beers! You can take a tour, and I see from their website that they now have a cafe on the premises as well.

I second Ackislander's suggestions as well.

I agree with both posts above. Am in Cooperstown currently. It is an amazing area. Obviously it's a baseball fans paradise with a lot to see.

Beyond that, you have the posts above, activities out on the lakes, a lot of hiking activities

For Ommegang Brewery, there is now a very good cafe on the premises that offers a lot of Belgian fare to pair with their beer as well as other Duvel products (parent company). Awesome brewery that I would highly recommend. It does get very busy though.

There are two other breweries too. Cooperstown Brewing and Council Rock. CBC just offers tastings and tours but it's good beer. Worth a stop. As is Council rock which is a brew pub so they offer food too with a good selection of beer too.

There are a lot of restaurants that have opened lately. Ate tonight at redneck BBQ which was very good. Lots of other choices too.

There are lots of scenic drives. Howe Caverns isn't too far away for another choice. It is a great area out here and very quiet. We are camping at Gilbert Lake State Park.

Fly Creek Cider Mill would be a fun place to visit, especially if it is getting close to apple season.

Have a drink on the veranda of the Otesaga Hotel, looking out over the lake. Friends of mine used to go to their Sunday brunch, but I'm not sure it it is still offered.

There is a Farmer's Market in town on Saturdays and had lovely meals at both Alex and Ika and Nicoletas. Good breakfast at the Doubleday Cafe. We obviously love to eat.
Farmer's museum, James Fenimore House. Tons of Antique shops if you're into that.

I have also found it a good place to drink wines by Dr. Konstantin Frank. They are everything you don't expect NY State wines to be. There are now other good wineries, but they were the pioneers.

Two other museums in Cooperstown certainly deserve visits...Fenimore Art Museum and Farmers Museum. Fenimore features Grandma Moses art. www.thisiscooperstown.com
When in the area we stayed in modest Brick House B&B on rte 10 south of Sharon Springs. And this town has an interesting history, once a historic popular spa village primarily for wealthy Jewish families. Interesting to see the old hotel and rennovated.

Bill makes a good point. It is not easy to find lodging in season. We too had to stay in Sharon Springs on one of our trips. It was fascinating, as he says, but just a tiny bit spooky.

Agreed on lodging as well. We went for the HOF weekend last week and camped 15 miles away. Talked with people who were staying in Albany. Obviously this is the extreme for HOF weekend every year but be alert of the min night requirements too.
