A week by the lake

Next year I would like to spend a nice quiet week by a lake that is not crowded with others. I just want to relax, read and enjoy the quiet.

I live in California, but would be willing to travel to another state for a rest.

Any suggestions.

If you want uncrowded, go in off season.

You may not want to travel this far, but I love Squam Lake in New Hampshire.

Just returned from a day at Lake Sunapee, sounds like what you are looking for.

The first weekend in August each year is the start of a week long crafts fair at the base of Mt. Sunapee ski resort.

sent above reply too soon...

Lake Sunapee is in New Hampshire, along with many others in the central part of the state, known as the Lakes Region.

Mu husband and I just returned from The Hedges at Blue Mountain Lake, New York, in the Adirondacks. You could not find a more peaceful or beautiful place and the other guests are very easy-going as well. There can be some children around but they have never seemed disruptive. It is very much a mountain-lake area. Good food is an added plus.

Alexrod6, I took your suggestion and checked the website for Hedges. It is a lovely place. I am glad to hear the food is good (big issue with us). There are four couples and we are looking for a good hiking vacation. Are there good trails near this property?
Thanks for the tip.

Canoe Bay in Wisconsin has a marvelous reputation for quiet and luxury: www.canoebay.com. There are also lodges on or near Lake Superior in Minnesota: Cove Point Lodge, Gunflint Lodge are just two that don't specifically cater to large groups or big families and are therefore quieter.

A friend recommended Gunflint to me. Sounds like a nice place...just need to find the time to get there.

Some friends stayed at Gunflint and said it was horrible! Dirty, boring, etc. I would not recommend this place!

Enjoylife, have you considered Huntington Lake, CA? We have a condo there and it is gorgeous, uncrowded and a great place to relax, fish, sail, kayak or just sit by the gorgeous blue lake and read.

If you want more info on the condo, e-mail me and I'll be happy to chat more with you about it!! ***kim*** :)

I have family in Lake County, Calif, north of the Napa Valley. Clearlake fits the criteria you described, especially if you select one of the lake side resorts or B&B's outside of the towns of Clearlake and Lakeport. I like the Konocti Lodge in Kelseyville but it may be a bit busier than you are looking for.

I second Kim's suggestion for Huntington Lake! Gorgeous views, nice condos and cabins to rent and very nice campgrounds as well. This is a high Sierra "sailing lake" and it is such a beautiful sight to see the colorful sails on the beautiful blue water. Fish, or not... I'm a reader/bike rider/sun lover. Might I add that I had my first kiss there at the Rancheria Campground?! Still remember it like it was yesterday... as the saying goes.

Ooooo, Huntington Lake! We used to love camping there when our kids were little. Have not been in several years. I am over the camping, just too much work and my back can't take air mattresses any more! Are there many cabins available to rent at the lake?

kimamom Aug 20th, 2004 03:13 PM

More condos now than cabins. It seems like ours is always full and we hardly get in any more. :( We're scheduled for Labor Day weekend and already have a Pontoon boat reserved for the afternoon on Sunday.

We just spent our first weekend up there this summer a couple of weeks ago and I absolutely loved it. I think the lake was the prettiest I've ever seen it. They were having the second High Sierra Regatta that weekend.

I still need to write a trip report about that weekend, it was just wonderful. ***kim*** www.huntingtonlake.com
