The 49 mile drive does not go through the Noe Valley.
Parking is much easier in the Noe Valley than in the Castro, Park west of Church, and the farther away from 24th you get, the easier it is to park. A very few areas near Church & Ceasar Chavez have 2 hr restricted parking on week days. It would be much easier to take the J-Church. The trip (once the car gets above ground) is quite scenic as it passes Dolores Park.
If you want to get to the Castro after visiting the Noe Valley, take the 24-Divisadero bus (pick up at either 24th & Castro or 30th & Church), and get off at 18th St in the Castro. If you want to visit the Fillmore shopping area, get back on the 24-Divisadero and get off on Jackson St, where I think the 24-Divis. terminates.
If you want to visit the Fillmore area by car, there is a not-too-expensive garage just 1/2 block east of Fillmore on Washington (I think).

I'll correct myself - the 49 mile scenic drive goes close enough to the Noe Valley to walk there. The drive goes down Dolores. When you get to about 23rd street, look for a place to park the car. Then just walk 1 full block west to Church to begin the walk from Church & 24th. Get an AAA map of SF. The walk from 23rd & Dolores will be uphill to Church. If you park past 24th st, the walk to Church will be flat.

I'm happy to read this post! For our trip we are planning to stay at the Tuscan Inn by Fishermans Wharf. I've been hearing people talk up the Union Square Area and just trash Fisherman's Wharf for being too touristy. News flash - I'm a tourist! Besides, the way I see it, it sort of reminds me of the type of stores you would find near my home, on the Jersey Shore boardwalks. I'm looking forward to all the beautiful scenery the bay (and SF itself) has to offer, as I'm an avid photographer. Thank you for reassuring me!

Don512, there is more shopping around Union Square, and we, the locals, need your vacation money, that simple
Seriosly, I like to hop on bus 19 to its final stop by the bay, watch the sails and sea gulls. But for a visit, I'd recommend the Union Square area, it's more central, easy to get everywhere.
