A question about seeing Haleakala Summit then drive southeast to the Seven Sacred Pools.
I'm curious if this would be too much in one day. I would go to the top of Haleakala in the morning , hike around some and picnic. Then drive over to the Seven Sacred Pools via hwy 31 and climb up to Waimoku Falls in the afternoon. Is this doable? Then drive back to the Maui Kai hotel. I understand that there is 5 miles of unpaved road along the way but, that it's passable.
Thanks, for your help.

It's do-able as long as you go up to Haleakala early in the morning. I drove to the Seven Sacred Pools by highway 31 and the road is not bad.
Note most rental car companies say you can't take this road or the insurance won't cover you.

It would be quite a day. Drive to the summit would be 2.5 -3 hours, allow time for hiking and picnic, then another 3.5 - 4 hours to `Oheo Gulch at Kipahulu, 2 hours to hike Pipwai and back, with no time for dawdling, and then 3 hours back to Ka`anapali. Remember, we are close to the equator, so the sun sets early--at 7:15 today, summer solstice. The days just get shorter from here.

I agree that it would be a very long, exhausting day. It's a LOT of driving and a LOT of hiking with a very early morning start.
We drove the gravel road around the backside of Haleakala in July 2003. It was not raining and the road was dry. It's slow going for those several miles, but it was fine in our Saturn Outback. Lots of rain would make a sloppy mess of things and subject you to flash flooding, which ain't good on that road.
The views on that day were outstanding...we could see all the way to the Big Island, and the views of Wailea/Kihei as you round north are awesome. The backside of Haleakala was spectacular, otherworldly, big brush strokes of vibrant paint against a blue sky and puffy clouds. VERY cool.
Again, reconsider cramming this stuff into one day; here_today gives good timing advice.

Wow, wouldn't that be funny if we ran into each other. I'll be on the lookout.
I have changed my plans to get up early and snorkel at Maluaka Beach. Then Drive on to Makena to snorkel at La Perouso Bay. Then keep going southeast to see Alelele Falls, Lindbergh's Grave , Seven Sacred Pools, and Waimoku Falls. I can accomplish this in one day ,right?
