A New Yorker's question
 

I'm from New york City and do not drive. Please suggest a couple of places in the US that i can travel to without needing a car when i get there.
I plan to travel the week of August 15th to the 20th.
any suggestions would be great.
I like the beach, visiting local museums, hiking and expriencing new places ETC.
please help

We live in Manhattan and hate to drive also. We've traveled to many parts of the country and never needed an auto. Chicago, New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Miami, etc. are a few that come to mind. Unfortunately, I wouldn't consider any of the above in the Summer. San Francisco or San Diego are good choice weatherwise and can be handled very nicely without an auto.

Have you considered a cruise out of New York? We've enjoyed the Nova Scotia (4 or 5 nights), Bermuda and Miami/Bahamas cruises. It's great to take a taxi to the pier, drop your luggage for a week and enjoy the different ports.

Oahu, New Orleans, Portland, San Francisco,

Washington, DC. Philadelphia, etc. Almost any major city can meet your criteria...

If you want beach, head to South Beach in Miami. If you want warm weather, sun, and great dining, Key West.

If you want good food, shopping, history, hot weather and a party try either New Orleans or Charleston.

You might be a bit limited in San Diego without a car.

There are a lot of really great ones - but not somany near a beach. Don;t know how you feel about temps - but for me FLA or anywhere even remotely south is unbearable in the summer (even NY is too hot). You might go for San Diego - its cute, you can get to beaches, there's other things to see/do and not too hot. (If you had left out the beaches I would have reco'd San Francisco.)

Cancun has nice beaches and some interesting historical sites. You can get around by bus. Also, St. John in the USVI has gorgeous beaches & St. Thomas, an interesting island to explore, can be reached via boat.

Chicago is fun. Take the el in from the airport. All the big museums are within walking distance as are a number of great restaurants. Cabs are plentiful.

Charleston, SC's historic district is very walkable, but you would need a car to get to the beaches and it's too hot for some people's tastes in August (although I like it).

You could do okay in Santa Monica for a few days w/o a car. San Francisco, obviously (beach but not warm).

Both Vancouver BC and Seattle have all you're looking for, including beaches. Mid-August is usually the warmest weather of the year in both cities, and both will offer plenty to keep you occupied. Vancouver has an added advantage of high-quality hotels obtainable cheaply on Priceline. If you haven't been, that would be my first recommendation.
