A Mini TR to the Annapolis Opera Finals 2024
Annapolis, Md. has a wealth of cultural activities. Its opera competition finals, held in Maryland Hall ( https://marylandhall.org. ) is but one of many.
I wrote my first TR about it in 2011; the most recent in 2017. Only the contestants are new! The information below is still up to date. OH, this time I sat behind Pianist Eileen Cornett and digital sheet music for the first time. The page turner had only to touch the pad to proceed to the next page. https://www.fodors.com/community/fodorite-lounge/a-mini-trip-to-opera-tryouts-finals-886568/ I'll go through my notes and add more later. ETA see below if link doesn't work. |
In 2024, there were 8 singers; 2 sopranos, 3 mezzo-sopranos, 1 tenor, 1 bass-baritone, and 1 bass. The winner (and, as always, my least fave) was Mezzo-soprano, Ruby Dibble. In case you are near, she has the title role in "Elisabeth Cree" at the Gimmerglass Festival (in upstate NY). As before, each sang a song of his/her choice, then one of the jurors' pick.
I'm so blown away by the pianist as she had to know the 5 works of 8 singers. Incredible. My second favorite was the crowd fave: Tenor, Wayd [s] Odle (check out Santa Fe Opera). https://www.fodors.com/community/fod...inals-886568/l |
