A good walking city?
Anybody suggest a good city to visit that you do not need a car? Excluding Boston and NYC. Spending about 5 days there.Thanks.
Chicago or San Francisco.
San Francisco, Charleston, SC, Savannah, Ga, Chicago, Key West and South Beach.
Aloohaaa,
Ditto on SF and Chicago. But in SF, you better be in shape if you take on California, Powell, Lombard or any of the other 7 hills!
I'll be in Chicago Thursday to burn some shoe tread downtown.

We found New Orleans (in the fall) to be walkable, "street carable" with a lot of inexpensive taxi's. Taxi/shuttle from the airport doesn't cost arm/leg either.
Although, "walkable" sometimes turns into "stumblable" in NOLA.
Mahalo,
Kal
Williamsburg VA
You'll find motels & hotels walking distance from the rail/bus station, as well as Colonial Williamsburg. If summer, you have the R&R bus for $1.50/day unlimited use.
I would say Philadelphia and Charleston, S.C.
Although not in the US, don't forget Montreal and Quebec City!
Kal, Kal, Kal.....what are we going to do with you - Staggering around AGAIN?!?! I thought you were over that..... ;)

Anyway, I agree with him on New Orleans, especially if you stay close to (or in) the Quarter.
Also, Washington DC. I've been there a bunch of times, but only once with a car.
suzzane, Forgot about good ol' DC. We have never rented a car there. Fly into Reagan and cab, Metro and shuttle it all over that fine city.

A lot of tourist stuff within walking distance...as long as it's not 95 degrees with 95% humidity!

Cindy, At least I can spell my name correctly this early in the a.m.! ;-)

Will be "walking thru New Orleans.." on 10-18 this year.
Kal
Kal:
Oh well, crap anyway. That's what I get for picking on youuuuuu.
As I just told you, 36 days to New Orleans and we'll be walking our little midwest legs off
Here's another vote for Chicago. Great walking city!
Sandra:

I'd say D.C. If you get tired of walking there is an excellent subway system that takes you just about everywhere within the city or to the suburbs.

Another vote for my favorite city, DC. So much to see and do, yet so easily accessible by metro, bus, or foot.
I was going to start with Boston and NY, but...So, I would have to say DC. Its made for walking. And if anything is too far, take a taxi or the metro.
In the South, New Orleans is the only city of size that's truly "walkable," I think.
How about the Canadian cities? Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are all walker-friendly.
Washington DC, San Francisco (lived in both of these places for a while & didn't have a car), South Beach, Florida, Key West, Florida
Dan, aside from NO, both Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina are cities in the south that are "walkable". Geography wise, both Key West and South Beach are in the South and walkable.
Philadelphia is a great city for visiting without a car. There are many beautiful streets to walk through, parks everywhere, and it's basically flat. Once, in my younger and leaner days, I walked all the way from Chestnut Hill to Society Hill.
Would add Santa Fe, Seattle, Baltimore.
Nantucket!
But, if you really want a city, try Montreal or Quebec. NYC is a great place to pick a neigborhood and get to know it by walking around.
Just for the record, I said "city of size" regarding New Orleans. The other places mentioned are fairly small in comparison.
San Francisco! Very charming, cosmopolitan city with lots to see and do. My daughter and I broke it up into areas - one day Alcatraz and Fisherman's Wharf, one day Golden Gate Park and Haight Ashbury area, etc. Trolleys and cable cars - great if you can catch them and they're not full and pass you by, and those hills are killers for walking, but a great, great city to shop and sightsee. Neptunes restaurant at Fishermans' Wharf is great, with great views and great food! We also went on a tour over the GG bridge to a forest - a jeep tour, and the guy was very nice and accommodating. Good luck!
I ditto Chicago.
Sandra,

I live in NYC and besides here the best walking city is Toronto, Ontario. You do not need a car at all. You walk to a lot of different neighborhoods[too many to list], plus their public transportation system is excellent.

If you must stay in the US, definitely walk through Seattle. You can walk to a ferry that takes you across Puget Sound.

Whatever you decide to do - have a great time.
Denver is a great walking city, int he downtown area. I've been several times and nver rented a car or took a cab. They've got a great slection of restaurants, clubs and shops you can walk to all over downtown.
Definitely Chicago. I was there for a week and walked all over. For some of the city's attractions, you can take CTA bus or metro - both were great and cheap. A great town!
Charleston, SC
Another vote for Chicago.
