A good stop between NY and Hilton Head

We'll be driving from NY to Hilton Head in October. We'd like to break up the driving by stopping in a nice scenic area about halfway down and also on the way back, preferably not cities. Do you have any suggestions on towns to stay in, hotels or bed and breakfasts in the moderate range? Thanks very much. Joan

What about small cities?

Go to Google maps in the "get Directions" section and enter your starting point and final destination. You'll see it's about 825 miles. You can then look at the may to see what towns are about halfway along the route - probably anyplace south of Richmond, VA and north of Fayetteville, NC would be a good stopping point. Assuming you are driving along I-95 check out Petersburg, VA, Roanoke Rapids, NC, Rocky Mount, NC, Dunn, NC. All are small towns just off or near the interstate. Along that route there are plenty of major chain motels/hotels to fit any pocketbook.

Go here for detailed information about what's available at every exit along Route 95:

Thanks very much. I've been checking the Google maps actually. What about 2 stops- Chinoteague Island, Va. and Nag's Head, NC? Would it be worth detouring that much for a night in each?

YES!!!

Either/or would very much be worth a detour!

I95 can be rough, so be sure to stay back off the highway a little if you take RoamsAround's suggestion.

I love both the Banks and Chincoteague Island. Richmond is lovely and you wouldn't have to go so far off your route.

Take a look at this place:

I haven't stayed there but I've heard wonderful things about it. It's well over half way, but your day 2 drive would be a lot shorter.

If not too late. Consider Historic Williamsburg. We always stop on the way south at their Woodlands facility. About 35 minutes east of the Richmond bypass. The perfect place to stretch your legs with plenty of walking.
