A few places to eat near New Smyrna Beach/Daytona areas

I just got home last night. A short break - 5 nights, two at my house and then three near New Smyrna Beach. Sunny and 70s - even 80, yesterday. Ahhhhh.

There are plenty of places to eat on the water - The Halifax or Indian Rivers, or the Atlantic Ocean. The food might not always be "the best" on the water but when you leave parts snowy the day after a massive snowstorm (and in fact have to move your flight dates a day forward) you are happy simply to have a sunny water view over which to sip your margaritas.

Here is where we ate:

Aunt Catfish which is next to the Dunlawton Bridge (which will take you to A1A and Ponce Inlet, etc.). We had dinner one night. I wasn't hugely impressed with the food but the margaritas were good. Apparently they do a better Sunday brunch. The meal ended with a cinnamon bun which was quite tasty. The salad bar was kinda scary. I just had visions of cruise ship illnesses with the shapeless mounds of various kind of "salad bar fixins". margaritas were good and Mom liked her friend shrimp. I'm not in a hurry to go back but I suppose if we had had a water view seat we may feel differently. It was just getting dark when we arrived - I suspect the views would have helped greatly.

The Breakers right on the ocean in NSB - an old favorite. Good Philly cheesesteak. The margarita was perhaps the worst of the lot. After you get done eating you can have ice cream at Treats on the Beach. Across the street is a place to rent bikes, scooters, etc. It isn't spring break week yet (or bike week) but the ramp to get on to the beach with your car was backed up quite a ways. It's race week - Daytona 500 is Sunday.

The Boondocks which is on the Halifax river, across the Dunlawton Bridge and then an immediate right as if you are heading to Ponce Inlet - fantastic. Excellent peel n eat shrimp, great wings, and the best margarita of the bunch. The sunset was beautiful. You can call ahead.

Deck Down Under - also very good food and fantastic views over the water. The crab cakes were very tasty. Great views, peaceful. This is as it says - under, as in Under the (Dunlawton) Bridge. It was quiet though - no loud car noises - the bridge is pretty high up. I'd go back pronto.

Crabby Joes - love this place. The food wasn't quite as good as Boondocks/Deck Down Under/Ponce Inlet, but I still love this place. It's on a pier over the Atlantic Ocean, in Daytona Beach Shores. Go over the Dunlawton Bridge and turn right once you are on A1A. The rest of the pier is full of fisherman and if you are lucky some pelicans begging for scraps.

Pappas which is in New Smyrna - it's been around since the 50s and has a good old fashioned breakfast.

Ponce Inlet Harbor Restaurant. A must for every visit. The food is good and how can you not love the views - also quiet and peaceful as there are nothing but boats and pelicans to watch. It's our favorite place but the new ones we just discovered (Boondocks, Deck Down Under) give it a run for the money. Many times they will have a band playing Jimmy Buffett type tunes.

Enjoy!

http://www.thespanishrivergrill.com/ Our new favorite place to eat at in New Smyrna beach, it is in the Publix plaza though. I love sitting at the bar with a view of the kitchen. They are great fun to watch.
http://gnarlysurfbar.net/ Great food and drinks, when the drawbridge goes up you get cheap drinks.

My husband loves Merks though but Breakers does have the best view. Glad you enjoyed your stay. We have had great weather here but think the 500 is going to get some rain.
