A dreamy week on Kauai with three generations

Hello everyone, just wanted to give you a very brief report on our family trip to Kauai. We went to celebrate a milestone anniversary for my husband's parents - there were 10 of us (2 grandparents, 4 40-somethings, 4 teens). We decided to stay on the north shore despite the risk of wet weather and big surf - great choice, I LOVED this part of the island. Stunningly beautiful and very low key. Hanalei is super charming and relatively unspoiled.

We rented a house overlooking Kalihiwai Bay - gorgeous views and we were able to watch whales spouting and breaching out in the water. We had a couple of days with some rain and wind but we also had several perfect, calm sunny days. Most of the time we had our pick of beautiful beaches; only on the first and last days were we unable to swim at Tunnels/Ke'e. Loved the beach at Kalihiwai - the waves were great gentle rollers, perfect for body surfing and boogie boarding. Great local scene too. We visited Poipu one day but were glad to return to the north shore.

Things some or all of us did: kayak to Wailua waterfalls, airplane ride w/ Wings over Kauai, luau at Mediterranean Gourmet, hike to Hanakapi'ai beach, surf lessons in Hanalei.

Although we cooked dinner at home most nights, we had one evening meal at Bar Acuda (excellent) and sampled Bubba's Burgers and Hanalei Pizza for lunch (both pretty tasty). We stopped at many fruit stands for amazing fresh pineapple, papaya, coconut and passion fruit. We had a lot of smoothies and shave ice.

A truly great trip.

Thanks for the trip report and glad you all had a great time.

As Tom Cruise's character said in the movie Risky
Business: What the "hey" - sometimes you just have to go for it". :)

making me even more excited about getting over there in March for 10 days. It is a fabulous place, our favorite of all the islands.

Kauai is definitely my favorite too. A pretty special place.

Oh, forgot to mention the fish tacos at Tacos Al Pastor in Kapaa - a great lunch en route from the airport to our house. And poke at Pono Market. SO SO GOOD.

Great review. Can you tell me who you rented the house from? We have a group of (4) couples making the trip next year and we're currently looking for a house to rent. Thank you!

Thanks for the report. I'm glad to hear the luau at Mediterranean Gourmet was good. There's nothing like the North Shore.

I love the poke at Pono Market too.

So sorry for the delayed response, we rented from Jean & Abbott. They were great and our house was fantastic. http://www.jeanandabbott.com
