Skip Svannah and stay more time in Charleston--there is way more to see and do and the restaurants there are awesome...

As far as staying overnite in Raleigh--there is really nothing historically to see in Raleigh and absolutely NOTHING in Rocky Mount or Fayetteville...I would personally drive as far as I am able from Richmond toward Charleston, and then find a hotel and crash for overnite--you will wear yourself out with a mini stop in Raleigh and then have a long drive to Charleston....

I live about 20 min S of Richmond and we drive to Charleston in ONE day--only takes us 5 1/2 hours-- I would rather get into Charleston the nite before, have a nice dinner and then be out of the hotel early the next day--rather than checking in on that next day and having to then start sightseeing ..but this is only my opinion...

Remember Memorial Day weekend in Charleston is the beginning of the SPOLETO FESTIVAL ( which is terrific), so BOOK a hotel NOW and yes, stay in Charleston for 3 days!
