911 Museum
 

I am visiting NYC with my daughter and granddaughter who is just 7. I am thinking she is probably a bit young for this museum. What are your thoughts?
Also, we plan to visit the Statue of Liberty but probably not Ellis Island. If my memory is right about Ellis Island it was a lot of reading and maybe too much for someone who will have just turned 7. Any ideas what we might do while down in that area? ...Brooklyn Bridge???

I think that 7 is a bit young for the 911 museum.

Ellis Island is actually really cool and has tons of exhibits and visitors can go thru the rooms immigrants would have been processed thru. It's interactive enough that I think a kid would enjoy it. I would not, however, take a 7 year old to a museum that memorializes a terrorist attack in the city they're visiting. It seems like that would frighten a kid. The outdoor memorials are moving and might satisfy your urge to visit without scaring a kid. I've never taken a kid to NYC so you'll have to let other posters steer you in the direction of kid friendly stuff.

She is a bit too young. But she would enjoy the hustle and bustle of Chinatown, just north of the Brooklyn Bridge.

I don't think a wee kid would get much out of the outdoor memorials, and definitely skip the museum.

This might be too much after the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, but here is another boat option: Last summer we enjoyed taking the ferry boat ride from Pier 11 near Wall street to midtown Manhattan. It goes across the river and stops at DUMBO on the Brooklyn side under the Brooklyn Bridge. That would give you great views of the bridge and be better than trying to walk across with a 7 year old.

There is a park area with ice cream and Grimaldi's Pizza is right there if you want to try that (and it is not too crowded).

You can get amazing views of Manhattan from the Esplanade in Brooklyn Heights

I agree with others that the 911 museum is far too intense/difficult for a 7 year old.

You can certainly walk the Brooklyn Bridge, but the full walk is at least a mile, so I don't recommend it for a 7 year-old. I'd walk halfway across, look back at Manhattan, and then return. If you want ice cream or pizza, there are plenty of excellent options on the Lower East side.

No, the 9/11 Museum isn't really suitable for a younger child, so definitely skip that. But visit the Memorial and walk through one of the impressive shopping malls (there are two).

What you feel like doing can depend on how hot it is. We were in NYC last summer in very hot weather and the idea of walking across the bridge (or halfway across and back) was not at all appealing.

Of course there is good pizza and ice cream in lower Manhattan.
