GranthamMommy, I think it would be fun too. Not in a pickup truck. For me a car with heated seats. But you're also right about being able to knock a few of those Eastern states off pretty quick. Might be best to land in NYC and pick up the vehicle in New Jersey. 2-4-1. Then there's the 4 corners, all you have to do is get there. If they hit TX right they wouldn't actually have to go there, although I've always wanted to go to Austin and I enjoyed Fort Worth.

hougs, is there any way you can start a bit later in the year?

The map of their route is pretty cool. Imaginative how they did it.

Oh, I missed the link to the map when it was posted. Luckily, hougs has a lot more time then 5 days and can actually do some fun things along the way.

I'm not sure I'd do it in a pick up truck at any time of year, let alone in mid winter, but it sounds like a great adventure. Maybe Hougs can write a book about it, a la Travels with Charlie??
If I win the lottery then I want to do something like it, but in more style .

Plenty of people, Boy Scouts even, do winter camping. If you have a cap on the back of the pickup or are bringing a tent and winter rated sleeping bags, you can do it.

hougs- I think it sounds great. MOST of us here are here to help and offer any assistance we can. We'd love to have you come "do the States".

If you actually do this, please let us know. Maybe we can wave as you go by. Or maybe we can get a Fodorite group together for couch-surfing! I'd certainly consider letting you have my living room floor for a night! (Of course, I'm in Texas, so you'd have to rest somewhere! It will take you 12 hours just to get across this state!) hahaha

Good luck. Please check back in often!

here is a site that shows the shortest route to, at the very least, "touch" all 48 lower states.

Not many sites to see on that trip. If I'm taking that kind of trip, I'm seeing some 'stuff'.

I agree. I understand the map is just showing the shortest route possible, but I would much rather spend more time seeing the highlights the US has to offer than basically seeing the rest area just inside a state's border!

Is there a map that shows how to hit the best of all 50 states?

Like sarge said, most of us would love to give you tips on what to see, do, eat and camp (?) in our areas.

Bunchargum? Is that you?

I'd start in Hawaii and end in Alaska. Stay in the lower 48 for the first part of your trip unless you want to live in 40 layers of clothes and snowshoes.

Personally, I'd spend 85 days in the Florida Keys and my last five days I'd drive the 48.
