Hmmmmmmmmmmm, just get far enough away so that Detroit isn't your major image of America!

Good news is that you won't have any trouble finding lakes in that area.

I am from Michigan originally and there are many great choices. You might look at this link, which has ideas for circle tours of the various great lakes. I would choose Lake Huron as its is closest to Detroit and the most scenic. (Lake Michigan includes Chicago where I live now and Lake Erie include Cleveland but you said you wanted to avoid big cities.) http://www.great-lakes.net/tourism/circletour/huron. Michigan, USA and Ontario, Canada both have very good tourism information websites. Also smaller towns and cities in Michigan and Ontario have nice bed & breakfast accomodations, often in historic homes with local hosts. www.michigan.org or www.ontariotravel.net. Another idea, don't know quite why your are going to Detroit, but you might consider staying the first day or last day in Dearborn a suburb of Detroit not far from the airport. The Greenfield Village and the related Henry Ford Museum are unique places of Americana, either one worth a full day. You have to see them on the website as explaning is too hard. www.hfmgv.org. You can even stay right there at the historic Dearborn Inn, now run by Marriott. www.marriott.com. Enjoy planning your trip! If you like our travel tips for Michigan, can we get some from you for our trip to Israel next year?

When will you be there? The seasons make a big difference in what we might recommend.

Dear Ann, Thank you for your reply. We have to be back to Ann-Arbor to run a teacher-training course in Science and Techology.
After searching the net I have a tentative plan I will appreciate to have your opinion on. 1. Arriving Detroit airport on 24th early morning (7:30) after a night flight from LA- renting a car and facing Lake Erie the USA bank.
1. Arriving to Port Clinton Hotel: Lakeland Motel for 3 nights July 24 - 27
2. Leaving Wed. morning - visit the Jarmie's Flea Market at South Amherst until late noon time (Doesit worth it?.
3. Continue towards the Niagra Falls to be there early evening to see the Falls at night. I don't have yet hotel but I heard that Niagra on the Lake in Canada, is a nice village to stay in. I would like to make reservation for 2 nights. To see the Falls on the seconf day during day time and travel around. (Does it worth to stay the second night in the same place?)
3. On Friday morning - or already on Thursday - to continue on the Canadian bank of Lake Erie. - I have no information nor places to visit or to stay in. for the next 2-3 nights.
Is this tentative plan realistic? Have you recom. on places to visit? to stay?
Thank you for any tip,
Nira
