IMPORTANT advice--
just go--don't put trips off until your health fails..
I have only N & S Dakota,Oklahoma & Arkansas left on my list.
Now having health problems that limit my traveling..Instead of road trips (which I love) I am doing "fly ins". In Nov. hope to fly into Oklahoma City--stay few days&fly to Little Rock.
The Dakotas are still a goal--my go across North D. by Amtrak , stay in Fargo then on to chicago and home..When there is a will there is a way--
good luck and good health on you journey..

Since I posted in June 2006, I have visited Idaho, Oregon and West Virginia, and have trips planned to Alaska (July) and Oklahoma (August for the PGA). That will leave me with two unvisited states -- Nebraska and Vermont -- but since I live in NY, I will try to visit Vermont in the Fall. And, as Bill Clinton left Nebraska as the last state he visited as President, Nebraska will be my last visited state, likely in 2008.

If you're starting out in DC ... I think Reagan airport has direct flights on Midwest to, oddly enough, Omaha. Then you can hit the Omaha attractions (zoo, CWS, Eugene Mahoney Park, etc.) before driving up to the Dakotas.

Just a little tip...

Omaha's beautiful and that would be a fun trip. You could also fly direct into Denver, rent a car and drive three hours to western Nebraska (Oregon trail and pioneer history) before heading north to the Black Hills (another couple of hours).

I was born and raised in ND and have since left for the greener pastures of Minnesota( ha ha ). My top two would be medora which has a top ten in the country mountain bike trail, and depending on the season a drive through some of the farm land in late july and early august. Some of my fondest memories I spent on a combine with seas of golden grain ahead of me and the horizon everywhere I looked. ND has very suttle beuty that few see. I love the mountains of montana, and the woods of minnesota, but I miss the openness of ND.
