First, I have to say that this thread has not only been very informative &amp; very helpful, it has been a lot of fun too! Mahalo to everyone for taking the time to give me some great advise &amp; insight as well as making my &quot;dilemma&quot; such fun! ALL the trip reports and pictures have been helpful &amp; everytime I read one, I get excited all over again for our trip! Different strokes, I guess... but one's &quot;babble&quot; has been my fun &amp; entertainment!! And I thank you all for it! &gt;:D&lt; Nuff said about that!

Yes, we FINALLY decided! We'll be on the North Shore for weeks 2 &amp; 3!! The East appealed because of the convenient location as well as recommendations from you all but it really came down to the fact that during our only other trip to Kauai (1986), we stayed in Poipu but the North Shore really called to us. So the North Shore it is!

So for accommodations, week 1 is in a private home in Haena, owned by a couple from our hometown, which we got in a silent auction fundraiser event here. Weeks 2 &amp; 3 we'll be at The Cliffs and weeks 4 &amp; 5 at Poipu Sands. From your tips as well as research, I found what looks to be very nice units at both the Cliffs &amp; Poipu Sands through vrbo, both at reasonable prices and both with ocean views!

So now it's on to planning all the activities! I'll scour your TRs but any advise on your favorite things to do in that hell hole will be appreciated!

And any suggestions on how I can possibly endure the next 7 months of waiting, waiting, waiting??? Surely there's a Klub &quot;how to endure&quot; list of some sort????

that sounds like a lovely time, really. Starting in endless, elemental Haena and ending up in poipu.. well how could that be anything less than delightful?!
While up north, you might enjoy one of the tours of Limahuli gardens, if you are a fan of historic garden sites with lovely ancient terraced agriculture. We love the priceville mana, but lament staying at a hotel without a kitchen there. mainly because the food selection, though delicious, is somewhat limited unless you want to take a drive into hanalei or south. You can get local fresh fish at the shop behind the hanalei dolphin..also fish express in lihue is awesome. potato-macaroni salad. yum.
While in poipu, check out the 'most awesome market' in old koloa for local style eats in between fancier eateries.
Have a great trip and savor the time leading up to it as well.

Your unbridaled enthusiasm for such an awful place is admirable. 8-)

Favorites:
Day: Start with a walk up and down Hanalei Bay, followed by a swim in the bay. Breakfast of fresh fruit. Spend the rest of day at Makua snorkeling, floating and gazing at Mt. Makana.

Evening: Watch the sunset at Hanalei Bay. Walk to town for dinner. Walk back to beach with take-out dessert and breath it all in while inhaling the best banana cream pie in the world.

Early Morning: When awoken by the rain, walk out onto the cottage's lanai and watch, listen and smell the weather. Fall asleep on the bed on the lanai.

Meal: Hamura's special saimin, with a chicken and beef skewer, at least one order of fried won-ton (they are not on the menu) and the biggest piece of liliko'i pie they have.

Beach: Makua (Tunnels)

Tour: Allerton Gardens

Art: There are some great galleries in Hanapepe.

Hotel: Hyatt

Beach Walk: Makewehi/Maha'ulepu area past the Hyatt.

Shave Ice: JoJos in Waimea.

Shopping: Hanalei Farmer's Market

Pastime: Watching the surfer dudes hang five at Shipwreck beach.

Do what Kal and some of us do, keep posting periodically with a countdown. I think Kal is down to 50 or something.

It's been almost 20 years since we've been to Kauai. And then we didn't stay on the north shore so I'm clueless. Do you know how far a walk it is from Hanalei to the Cliffs Resort?

You would need to drive down into Hanalei from the Cliffs, which is in Princeville. Princeville is a 5-10 minute drive from Hanalei.

I just spent 4 weeks in Hawaii in July.
I liked going to a few islands in that time but you know what you like. It was my first time back to the big island in 10 years!

Gotta tell you daydreamin....you come back everyone tells you you look so healthy. YAH FEEL HEALTHIER TOO. something about sucking up all that FRESH AIR, walking all over the place, fresh fruit.

ITS GONNA BE GREAT!!!

On other trips to Hawaii we have stayed in two of these three units. They use to offer deals when you booked for a month but I think the owner has turned the management over to a local real estate firm.

one bad experience on VRBO in Princeville so if you find yourself renting there show me the link. I have not searched I am thinking this guy has been kicked off VRBO by now.

My experience at this one condo in the puu poa was very unusual. You don't need to hear my story as it is not indicative of other owners. I have done this for a bout 10 different summers.
Have rented many times and this was our first real dog. Usually you get what you pay for and the pictures don't lie.

Thanks, Sarah...I can just imagine that after a month in paradise, you do come back feeling &amp; looking great! Can't wait to try that! The Hanalei House looks nice! We've had good luck with vrbo too so hopefully that luck will hold! I agree that you get what you pay for although there have been times we've wondered how they ever managed to get such great pictures of some of the places! :D

Daydream look at the places we wrented I went back this year and could not find comparable deals. You are in houses so you don't feel like you are a complex. Best of all someone cooks dinner preferrably, someone else and YOU WALK TO THE BEACH just around the corner. After dinner you both wash up because come on yah gotta contribute some LOL. but then go out on the deck and look up at the stars. My favorite thing to do on any island. I am never on the beach laying during the day always at night.

Go west! It's the non-touristy Kauai!

We spent a week on the southwest side of the island at Waimea Platation Cottages. Absolutely delightful...cottages of different sizes (hardwoods, ceiling fans, wicker, Weber grill out back) set among fruit trees and coconut palms, next to the water. At night it is pitch black and dead quiet. It was the only lodging on that side of Kauai. It's just past the turnoff to Waimea Canyon.

Speaking of the Southwest part of the island--it's where the roads (choice of two) up to Waimea Canyon start for one of my &quot;favorite things&quot; on Kauai that you asked us to share.
After seeing the &quot;Grand Canyon of the Pacific&quot; (quote of Mark Twain?)continue up to Kokee Lodge for a hot meal. GREAT cornbread and chili there. I love the place. It's like a New England country lodge--right down to the cool mountain air, and numerous chicks, hens and roosters strolling the grounds! The lady at the front desk gets really ticked off with kids who chase them, so be on best behaviour!
Continue on up the road to the Kalalau Lookout, and then the next lookout PAST it--(can't recall the name) for those unbelievable heavenly views of the Kalalau Mts with the ocean in the distance. Pray that the sky is clear, because it's often foggy and damp up there, no matter what time of year.
There are geat hiking trails up in those woods too.
