5 Nights Austin and San Antonio

My husband and two children (both teenagers) will be flying into Austin next March. We plan on driving directly to San Antonio upon arrival, and staying there for 2 nights. Would we get more out of our time by spending 1 night in Fredericksburg before heading to Austin for the last 2 nights where we will fly out of to go home, or add an extra night to either San Antonio or Austin and do a day trip to Hill Country?

Thank you!

You could drive to Fredericksburg from San Antonio and then on to Austin in one day. That would give you time to visit the shops along Main Street (don't miss Rustlin' Rob's or Dooley's Five and Dime), eat lunch at one of the many good restaurants--German food is a specialty at many of them, and maybe spend a couple hours in the excellent National Museum of the Pacific War (the Nimitz Museum).

But if you want to enjoy more of what Fredericksburg has to offer, then I would recommend an overnight stay. First, this would give you more time to visit the Nimitz Museum which can easily take a full day depending on your interest in WWII history. For more history, take a drive to the LBJ Ranch (30 minutes from Fredericksburg) and do the self-guided driving tour of the ranch and the U.S. Park Ranger tour of the ranch house. If you are there on a Friday night, Saturday or Sunday afternoon, you might want to get reservations for the popular Rockbox Theatre. If you enjoy hiking, a hike up Enchanted Rock is a must.

So, you could get a nice taste of Fredericksburg in a day trip, but an even better one if you have the time for an overnight stay.

Your information is very helpful, longhorn, thank you!

OT (somewhat) - Longhorn, have you been to the WWII museum in New Orleans. We thought it was fantastic, and just wondered how the two museums compare.

SF7307--No, I have not seen the WWII Museum in New Orleans. A return visit to New Orleans is on my list for travel during the
next year or two.

Just making sure you know that Fredericksburg is out of the way. Austin to San Antonio is about 75 minutes. San Antonio to F'burg is prob 1.5 hours then 1.5 -2 to Austin (depending on where in Austin and what time of day) If that isn't an issue, then F'burg could be a diversion and a nice little side trip. Personally, with such limited time, I'd add the day to either Austin or SA or just leave SA early and make F'burg a day trip.

When are thou coming in March? It's very busy for about 2 weeks in March for South by Southwest, and sometimes NCAA basketball regionals.. You definitely need reservations soon if you plan on those times march 9-13

Austin, I'd like to stay the extra night in Austin, but my husband wants to spend it in Fredericksburg. We'll see...

We'll be in TX at the end of March, so we should be alright. Thank you!

I think either way will be okay. Maybe a day in F berg will be a compromise. The end of March is safe, and a better chance of warmer weather.
