Coming to NY later this month (on a very tight budget) with my 16 year old daughter staying Mid-town Manhattan. Any suggestions for shopping etc.

Hi Dianne!<BR>Just one shopping tip for those on a budget: we found that instead of buying snacks from the fast=food shops that left you hungry an hour later, we ate better and saved money by buying fresh fruit, juices, and nuts from the health-food supermarkets on 8th Avenue... there's quite a few between 47th and Central Park. And at least one subway ride up to 125th for a stroll along that shopping street is a good idea, too (plus you will see the Apollo, where Ella Fitzgerald began her singing career).

Alan's suggestion is a good one. Also note that the street vendors selling fruit often have very good prices and good quality. 9th Ave in the 40's and 50's has some good and moderstely priced ethnic dining. She'll like Urban Outfitters (who may be having a good sale) and also the big H&M store. My daughter (now 20) loves the H&M store and says they have lots of stuff that the H&M stores elsewhere don't have. <BR><BR>Pricey things to avoid: coffee shops and convenience stores in Times Sqare or adjacent to expensive hotels. Dinner "by the pound" from the buffet at so-called Gourmet delis - it's overpriced - you can do better at a cheap sitdown place. <BR><BR>Things to do:<BR>She will also appreciate some of the funky shopping and atmosphere on St. Mark's Place and the lower east side (try ave A through 2nd Ave just above Houston). Sunday street shopping in "the bargain district" on Orchard St often has great values, especially on leather goods. You will both enjoy wandering through Chinatown if you like cultural flavor and fun. Don't hesitate to refill your water bottles from drinking fountains - NYC has some fo the best tasting municpal water anywhere.

hi, you may also want to try shopping on 34th St between 6th Ave to 8th Ave. There's a Huge Macy's there (where the thanksgiving parade is always held) and lots of little inexpensive shops for clothing. But it WILL be crowded... <BR>There are cheap eats throughout the city - I would recommend hitting chinatown/little italy for some tasty and inexpensive foods as well as VERY fresh produce. We always find ourselves heading that way to get some fresh groceries and fruits! Have fun! Also if you want to catch any broadway shows, log on to www.theatermania.com - the sign up is free but they give u discount codes to see shows sometimes for 30-50% off!! Enjoy!
