5 days, 4 kids
 

We're headed to DC mid-October with 4 kids, ages 4,7,11 and 14. Need help with hotels and potential itineraries. We really need 2 bathrooms due to a teenage daughter. Am guessing we'll end up with adjoining rooms but are, of course, looking for the most reasonable, yet comfortable, accommodations. (We usually stay at Embassy Suites or comparable. The "kitchenette" really helps between meals.) Are hoping we can stay for $300 or so per night. We'll be driving in from TN but expect to use Metro for most of our travel. Any thoughts on the need for a stroller for the 4 year old? We don't own one anymore but are questioning the wisdom of a purchase in order to minimize whining and maximize sightseeing. Is it worth the hassle of wrestling with it at the attractions? We've contacted Senator Frist for White House and Bureau of Engraving tickets. Any other must-haves before we go? Thanks for any help you can offer.

I would definitely recommend a stroller of some type. The amount of walking is incredible even using the Metro. Buy the lightest, cheapest folding stroller that will fit your child. Be aware that there are not many restaurants anywhere near the monuments. Things are quite a distance away. It is certainly walkable but the whining may drown out the enjoyment. If I was able to buy strollers for my then 8, 9, and 15 year olds, it would have been worth it.

Definitely pick up a stroller. I have one that is an umbrella type. When folded it has a strap so that I can throw it over my shoulder if necessary. There's a lot of walking to be done, and it can be hilly. Spare yourself the whining:)
Make sure to see the National Zoo. I think it's free admission, and is just an amazing place to go. the kids will love it.
The metro is very user freindly and reasonably priced.

Sounds like our "others" were cut from the same cloth. Thanks for confirming that it's a worthwhile investment.

the last I knew, this place was closed for renovations, but maybe they'll be re-opened by the time you travel. It's just a few blocks from Dupont Circle in a nice neighborhood.

Summerfield Suites by Wyndham -- Embassy Square

When we looked at it, it was a converted apartment building, and had suites with 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 3 tv, LivingRoom/Kitchen area. I think our price was to be ~$150, 2 yr ago (ended up elsewhere as friends insisted on staying in Alexandria)
