5 +/- day Road Trip Vancouver to San Diego with Dog
My human traveling companion will fly to SD, but I am driving with the dog. I will make the first push to Portland area in one day, but then I'm not sure where to stop after that. Our eventual destination is Encinitas.
I prefer to drive for 5 hours or so a day and don't want to stay in a crummy motel next to the I5. On the other hand I don't want to detour too much. I will search pet friendly accommodation, but would like a few tips about what locations to pick.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Vancouver, B.C.
B&B or motel accommodation in the $100 range.
I won't be doing much sightseeing along the way, except for at the end of the day, in the town or place where I settle for the night.

When are you traveling?
My preference would be the coast through California in order to avoid the heat (if summer) and boredom of the Central Valley:
1. Van - Portland via BC 99/I-5. Stay near the airport for cheaper and more dog-friendly accommodations.
2. Portland - Crescent City (CA) via I-5 and US 199.
3. Crescent City - Santa Rosa via US 101. This will take you through the Redwoods (opportunity to stretch human and dog legs). You can stop anywhere between Santa Rosa and SF; stay in the suburbs to avoid higher lodging costs.
4. Santa Rosa - Santa Maria via US 101. Again, anywhere before Ventura for a stopover, to keep lodging costs in check. (This probably eliminates Santa Barbara, which has high hotel prices as a rule.)
5. Santa Maria (vic.) - Encinitas vis US 101, I-5. I'd take the Ventura and San Diego Fwys rather than I-405 (San Diego Fwy) through LA.
It's also doable via I-5 (Ashland, Sacramento, Santa Clarita as overnights). Faster but brain-killing.
