40th b-day long weekend getaway

My wife is turning 40 in late September and I would like to take get away for a long weekend and I'm hoping to get some suggestions from more seasoned travelers.
Info that may help...
We live in Washington DC so I'd like to keep it on the east coast
My wife loves the beach and we are both warm climate people.
We're active though due to a recent foot injury we are unable to do activities that we used to such as hiking.
We're adventurous when it comes to food but more low key when it comes to wild parties/night life.

My initial thoughts had been Charleston but she ended up going there on a girls trip so that's out. A co-worker suggested Naples but I really don't know a ton about it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How long is your weekend and are you driving or flying?

If driving, try Wilmington, N.C. which has a lot of beach and should be very nice at the end of September You could go as far as the Sea Islands in Georgia as well.
Naples is on the Caribbean.

If you're flying, Miami, Saint Augustine, Amelia Island all might be what you're looking for, but Miami might be too hot at that time of year.

I mean "Naples is on the Gulf of Mexico, not the East Coast"--I knew there was something wrong with that recommendation.

Does your wife like the beach as "looking at it, taking long walks along it, enjoying the sea air" or as in "swimming"?
Late September is a really nice time of year on Cape Cod. Easy access to Boston from DC. You could rent a car and drive out to any number of towns on the Cape that are picturesque, on beaches, have loads of restaurants of all types and price ranges, and by the end of September the crowds have thinned out (although it's still not deserted).
For example, if you were stay in Wellfleet, there's the railtrail and you could rent bikes for very nice, flat lovely bike rides. Lots of art and crafts galleries, funky clothing boutiques, seafood joints on the shore, fancier restaurants in town, beaches.

I meant to say, if she's into swimming, the Cape in late September would not be a good choice, unless she likes very cold water.

Savannah GA, Wilmington NC, a cabin in Shenandoah, a city break in Boston, or a beach getaway in either Chincoteque Eastern Shore or Outer Banks are all favourites of mine.

Thanks for the suggestions. Flying is not an issue though I'd still want to stay continental US since even a quick flight to the Caribbean seems to eat up a huge chunk of the day. Regarding length, it's probably 3 day though a fourth is a slim possibility. I love swimming in the ocean, used to life guard at the shore back in the day, but my wife is not a fan of open water swimming.
