4 weeks in Hawaii: Which islands?
 

We are going to Hawaii for 4 weeks. Trying to decide which islands to spend it on. We are thinking either of spending the entire month on Maui or split between Maui and Kaui.

What is the best part of Maui to stay on? We want to rent a condo there.

Is this your first time? 4 wks is a LOT of time for a tourist to spend on just 1 HI island unless you (a) plan to veg most of the time or (b) explore every nook and cranny of Maui. Splitting 2wks each b/w Maui and Kauai would be ideal.

"best" part of Maui is very subjective. most sunny and luxurious would be South Maui (Wailea). most active while still being sunny and semi-luxurious would be West Maui (Ka'anapali/Lahaina) and manicured Kapalua. while the most tranquil, serene but not sun-drenched would be East (Hana).

same goes for Kauai. sunny and luxurious South (Poipu), active/plenty of offerings East(Kapa'a, Lihue), and scenic, heavenly but not sun-drenched North (Hanalei, Princeville)

I'd split 4 weeks into 3 islands.

I hope you have budgeted well for this. I don't see 4 weeks in Hawaii costing much less than $8000, excluding dining out/drinks and paid activities.

I'd do two islands, two weeks each. That schedule would also probably work well for condo rentals.

Depending on your budget and what you want to do, you can do three or four islands in a month. Not knowing what you like to do, I can't really suggest which islands to visit.

Our favorite island is Kauai because it is so beautiful and still quite undeveloped. There are no building higher that a coconut tree and there are some fabulous beaches to explore.

If $$ is no objective, you have plenty of time to spend a week on each of the 4 main islands, Oahu, Maui, Big Island & Kauai.

My sister& husband goes to Hawaii every other year for 6 weeks-2 months and stay the whole time on Maui. Somehow they don't seem bored probably due to the surfing & other hobbies and they stay long since they are coming from the other side of the world.
I prefer to spend my whole time in Maui too although will visit BI next year (airfares permitting). Kauai was our least favourite, really enjoyed Oahu's north and east coasts.

If it's your 1st time to Hawaii, I would say do 1 week per island (Maui, Kauai, BI, and Oahu). Otherwise, if you really want to only do Maui and Kauai, then 2 weeks each.

Bluefan, Thanks for all the ideas. I lived in Oahu and have traveled to the Big Island and Kaui, this is first time for my wife. 2 + 2 seems a good idea. mtmz
