Am track is not cheap so check Southwest Airlines and Amtrak for comparisons. I don't think you can easily catch Amtrak from the airport. I think you'd have to take a cab or Uber into downtown LA from the LA airport. If ypu do I'd try to do do during the morning hours rather than nighttime as it probably is a little better.

Fly Away bus is the way to get from the airport to Los Angeles Union station for your trip on Amtrak.

@nanabee unfortunately SW does't have direct flight LAX-SAN and checked with other airlines like AA, Delta and United, the airfare is ridiculously expensive like USD250+. Thus Amtrak is the way to go, I guess.
