East of Scottsdale is Lion Country, park with different kinds of cats and other animals. Corner of Scottsdale and Chaparrel Roads is the McCormick Train Park..good for picnicing...downtown Old Scottsdale is fun to walk around with stopping at the Sugar Bowl for lunch or dessert. A Desert Jeep trip arranged through any hotel/motel would be fun, along with an afternoon or evening at Rawhide...for dinner and western type show...drive out to Carefree and Cave Creek. Downtown Phoenix has a fabulous Science and Technology Museum/IMAX Theater and as long as you are downtown you should stop in Bank One Ballpark(BOB) for lunch or dinner at TGIFriday's...great ballpark with retractable roof...and, Arizona Center downtown has all sorts of great quality touristy shops and restaurants. You could do the downtown area the same day you do the Heard Museum, not far from each other.
