4 days in NYC on our own
 

In July, 8 of us will be in NYC on our own---suggestions as to top sites to see, restaurants to visit, best way to get around, and other info that could be helpful.

I suggest you do a text search and read the zillions of threads on NYC, plus visit Fodor's section on NYC.

I'll second Gekko's advice. Do some research first.
Top sites? There are hundreds.
Restaurants? There are thousands worthy of your consideration.
Best way to get around? Walking, bus, subway, cab, limo, etc.....depends where you're going and how much you want to spend.
Other info? That's an open-ended thing!

Just don't walk down the sidewalk side by side.

Have a pre-assigned meeting place in case someone gets lost.

Please get more than 2 hotel rooms.

Eat at an Italian place called Carmine's. Make reservations though because the wait can be very long.

Dessert at Serendipity can follow, and you will be very happy.

I agree tht you need to do some research. We never take tours and read up on what to do. We've taklen 8 fun trips to NYC on our own. TheUnited Airlines magazine has articles on "3 days in...." You can get it online and find out waht they recommend for 3 days in NYC. Rick Steve's books have itineraries too as do others. One thing that I highly recommend to everyone who goes (besides theatre and art museums) is taking the Tenement Museum tour. on the lower eastside. They have preserved an old tenement building and give a wonderful tour. You will love it. I've done it twice and I'm in awe of how our ancestors survived. Also very interesting is the Radio and Television Museum off 5th Avenue and of course the Empire State building but when we were there in December there was an hour wait just to get tickets! Teddy Roosevelt house is good if you are into history. Another great restaurant is Gramercy Park and Lupo's both of which you need to make reservations 30 days in advance (expensive). I was on the phone at 6:30 am PST to get to them right at 9:30am and it was worth it.
