4/30/2015 Driving Vegas to Newport Rhode Island - southern route

BFF & I will be driving with a 4yr old boy and a small dog from Vegas to Rhode Island starting this Thursday 4/30. They were on more of a deadline and did RI to NV in 4 days. Going home we will have more time 5 to 6 days maybe 7 so looking for areas that would be good for stopping along the way. Will be traveling I40 thru AZ, NM. TX, OK, AR and TN. I81 once we get into Tennessee. We are move familiar with the east coast as we get closer to home. Would like to see some of the old RT 66 and anything else we shouldn't miss while out this way. Any suggestions? Thanks,
Lynn

Some of these for adults, some of them great for a kid to run around. All not too far off your routes, some are quick stops, some and hour or two, some drive-throughs.

Where will you join 40?

AZ -- depends on where you join I-40
NM -- Acoma Pueblo
TX -- Cadillac Ranch outside Amarillo
OKC - Cowboy Hall of Fame, lots of Rte 66 segments esp near Mustang
AR -- Petit Jean State Park
TN -- Memphis, Graceland
Jackson, Casey Jones Museum
Nashville, The Hermitage
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
VA Monticello (near I-81)
PA Hershey
NJ Delaware Water Gap
CT Mystic Seaport, Essex Steam Train
RI Carousel at Westerly

Is the dog negotiable? It will be something of a pain to deal with if you want to stop at some of these places.

It looks like we pick up I40 in Kingman AZ. The dog must come with us so we do realize that will limit some of what we will be able to do. Thanks

We are also considering the northern route thru UT, CO, NE, IO, IL, IN, OH & PA. Plotting out two routes and we may just flip a coin to decide.
