36 Hours in NYC - Need Romance & Fun

My wife and I are planning to be in New York City for a scant 36 hour weekend December 2,3. What are the must-sees. We will be staying at the Marriott Marquis and arrive on Saturday morning and leave Sunday evening.

i've not had the luck to eat there (yet) but i have heard that the most romantic restaurant in NYC is One if by land, Two if by sea. we sent my parents there as a gift and they raved about it. it's on barrow st, in the Village, and they said it gives you a great feel for historic NY.
other than that, tea at the plaza, or hot chocolate and ice cream at rumplemintz in the St. Moritz are two of my favorite winter in ny things to do.
you'll be a week early for the tree to be lit, but it is up already and pretty cool to see b/c it's so big.
your wife might be interested in the shoe dept at macys. it takes up half the floor of a store that is one city block wide. when the elevator door opens, they should have a choir of angels trumpeting you as if you are entering heaven, b/c you are entering shoe heaven.
I stayed at the St. Moritz a little over a year ago and there wasn't a Rumplemintz - did I miss it or is it no longer there?

dan-
i've lived in new york my whole life and still enjoy a romantic weekend in the city. one if by land is very lovely, but expensive. in the same price range i also recommend le bernadin, la cote basque and the sign of the dove. for less expensive or different ethnic restaurants pick up a copy of "time out new york" or search their web site. i don't know if this is your first trip to ny, i am assuming it is. i suggest a carriage ride through central park. you can walk to the entrance of the park from your hotel, and the lights of broadway will be a treat. the ride is about $50 for 20-30 minutes. the park is beautiful, even without leaves on the trees and you can experience the country in the city. if you want to get a feel for some fun city neighborhoods, ride the subway to greenwhich village or tribeca/soho and just walk around. if you enjoy musuems, i don't ned to tell you how many there are here, but for something different i would highly recommend the isamu noguchi musuem in long island city (you can ask the hotel to direct you by public transportation or take a taxi. there's also another romantic restaurant called the waters edge in long island city. their food is just ok, but the views of manhattan are unsurpassed. two other good walk around places are rockefeller center and battery park city. i think the new yorker magazine has the best listings for music, movies, lectures and things to do, its the guide i use to plan my weekends. have a wonderful time!!!
