350 mile radius of NJ
Looking for a destination within driving distance from NJ (Trenton area), preferrably no more than 5-6 hours away. Week of Feb. 4-11; two of us (sort of in our 30s) will be driving. Not really museum people; we're more outdoorsy-types (not too stenuous hiking, nature photography, unique sites, amazing waterfalls, etc.) We like to explore out-of-the-way places. Any hotel/eatery suggestions along the way would be appreciated as well. Thanks!

How about the Finger Lakes area of NY - I was looking at that area for a long 4-day weekend, but maybe it would be better in the Spring. ((b))

The problem in February is weather. Going either north or west, they'll likely be snow on the ground.
If you ski, there are some great spots on Vermont or New Hampshire. Even if you headed south west (Skyline drive, etc.), the weather is still going to make hiking a bit of a slog. |
How about Cooperstown NY?

Annapolis Maryland is really interesting, even in winter. Make sure to take a tour of the naval academy.
For a bit of nature you could go to Chincoteage. It will be desolate for sure but you could drive around the beach and walk on the trails if you get a half way decent day. You may even see the ponies. Another great trip is Gettysburg, even if you are not a civil war buff. It is quite interesting. |
