Yes, definitely go! My son's first airplane trip was to Hawaii to visit his grandparents when he was 6 mo. old. We had a wonderful time and made lots of wonderful memories! :)
Our pediatrician recommended nursing at take-off and landing which worked like a charm! Have a great trip! ***kim*** ((#)) |

Can I fly with you next time **kim** LOL |
I also say take the baby. My first daughter flew to to Florida from New England when she was 4 months old and to London when she was 9 months old. No problems and as others have said she won't remember the trip but will love the pictures. We have another daughter due May 7th and are hoping to take both girls to Hawaii next Februrary. Take the baby and have a great time!!!

This posting & replys have been a huge help to me! My husband and I are headed to Hawaii next month with our son who will be four months old. Made the decision this week to take my sister along to help take care of the little man. Great to read about traveling with an infant. I travel a ton with work, and this experience will be so different - and hopefully wonderful for all of us traveling. Thanks for letting me take advantage of your post results happybluesky!

No problem Melissa2210! Would you post a trip report for me when you come back? I'd truly appreciate it. We still don't know if a condo or a resort would be better for us.

Happybluesky: We've taken our grandchild & family, to both condo's and resorts. We are staying at the Hyatt Resort in Poipu, because it is our Anniversary in Aug. We order up a mini frig and crib for the parent's room, and there is a coffee maker for mornings on the lanai. In a resort we feel we can just roll her in the stroller when we go to the breakfast buffet, Happy Hours on the Terrace, restaurants for meals, so that we don't have to pack her up in the car everytime we want to go out. They have a wonderful lagoon with shade huts we will use during the day when we are not doing some activity. She is a good car traveler too, so have no problem with driving around the island. %%-

Happybluesky -- you are guaranteed to get tons of answers to a child-related question on this board :)!!! My kids are 8 and 12 and though we travel with them lots now (and took them to Hawaii last August), we didn't do much major traveling when they were very young, but I can remember what it's like to have babies and having been to Hawaii here would be my concerns --
1) I would find it difficult to make plans prior to the baby being born, simply because you just don't know what your baby will be like and how you are going to feel. Taking our daughter to Hawaii at three months would have been no problem -- she was a great baby who slept anywhere (even 10 hour car trips weren't a problem) and changes in her environment/schedule didn't bother her. However, with my son, even a simple weekend a two hour car ride away when he was three months is now known as our "vacation from hell." We came home early. He hated his schedule being disrupted and didn't like sleeping in the portacrib, so would wake up every hour, something he did not do at home. It was not fun. After that experience, we shelved a planned trip to Hawaii that we would have taken when he was one and our daughter was five, we just couldn't envision spending all that money to not enjoy ourselves and the kids appreciated it much more at ages 8 and 12! 2) My big concern about babies and Hawaii -- the sun!!! We have been all over the Caribbean and Mexico and have never felt as strong sun as we experienced in Hawaii. And I know that pediatricians don't recommend sunscreen for babies under 6 months. Of course you will try to keep baby out of the sun, but it's not always avoidable, especially driving in a car. My son requires SPF 60 at all times so this is always a concern for us. 3) However, toddlers are definitely more difficult -- between ages 1 and 3 even a one hour plane trip was difficult with both my children so they are definitely more portable as infants! Hope this helps. Whatever you decide I am sure will be best for you and your family. |
