3 girls discover New York
Hi! My two girlfriends and I will be in New York from 3/24 until 3/30. We are german students from Berlin and guess, that New York is an exciting city too. I would be happy to get some suggestions for things to do besides the major attractions. What about good clubs, cafes and sites, where New York residents stay? Perhaps somebody will join us?! Thank you so much. Sabine

NY is definately a great place to be. I live on the west side..next to the Dave Letterman studio...My friends and I love a jazz club called Smalls..in the west village (greenwich village) on 7th avenue. It has a 10$ cover charge and GREAT music. They open at 10PM and have sets at 10,12, and 2AM with a jam session at 4AM. Also Central Park is great to walk through..although really cold at this time....especially the area near the boathouse. The east and west village is great to walk down...the east village is really safe now..although I would still be careful. For the tourist spots...go to the World trade center...and see the view, or the empire state building...the lines are not to long this time of year...Have a great time! If you have any other questions...feel free to e-mail me.
Guten Tag! and welcome to America. You picked a great city to visit. I agree with Holly on her suggestions about Greenwich Village. Go there early during your visit and find a few clubs and cafes where you feel comfortable. There are so many its tough to recommend but I do like a small cafe for breakfast called Anglers & Writers. Balducci's is a fine food grocer which is a great stop to pick up some treats.

As for other tourist spots, don't miss an afternoon of shopping on fifth avenue. I suggest a taxi to The Plaza Hotel at Central Park and just walk down fifth stopping here & there. Rockefellar Plaza will be on your right across from St. Patrick's Cathederal which also worth a stop. Try some of the museums for modern art as well. I like the Whitney Museum and the Guggenheim always has good shows. And, don't forget Broadway - you can buy 1/2 price tickets the morning before each show at the World Trade Center. Have fun!!

NYC is the place to visit but the hotels can be a little expensive a good alternative is to stay in a hotel in NJ and take the train to Manhattan it's very convenient and cheap. The Hilton Hotel in Newark Penn-Station cost 95$ a night and the PATH Train near the hotel will take u to the heart of NYC until 33rd street in about 35 mins, it's safe and cost 1$ to ride.

For Clubbing check out this site www.clubnyc.com where u can find guest lists to the best clubs in NYC with a discount admission u can save bw 5$ and 15$ with this list, an average club admission cost $20 plus drinks that cost bw $5 & $7. If you are into Techno music these are thebest clubs: TUNNEL, SOUND FACTORY, TWILO, LIMELIGHT, ROXY and Webster-hall (www.webster-hall.com) is a tourist club not too bad.

Have fun and enjoy it, if you have any more question u van e-mail me at [email protected]

I was in NYC in October and stayed at a place called Murray Hill Inn, just off Lexington int he 20's or 30's. Very competitive priced--we paid $95 a nigt for a double and they do have triples, etc. Bath down the hall. It was an easy and safe location. We wandered Greenwich village for 2 days straight--it was fun. Don't know your budget, but for great food try Po's in the village (go at lunch, cheaper and you can get in); another great suggestion is Union Square Cafe (can line up for lunch. Both are higher end rather than lower, but not out of sight, especially at lunch. I like the Met for museums, didn't think the Guggenheim was worth admission price (though building is definately worth a visit). have a terrific visit.

If you enjoy classical music, the tour of Carnegie hall is interesting, and a good value. makesureyou take a harbour tour. The cheapest is to simply take the Sten island Ferry to Staten island and back. The Circle Line boat tour that goes completely around Manhatten is very interesting, too. South Street Seaport will be very intereting to you. Bars and restaurants, plus New York history.
BAK
Hi Sabine: I agree with most of the other postings. Greenwich Village is a great place to explore, especially its surrounding areas of SOHO, Tribeca, the East Village. The East Village is very hip with an exploding restaurant scene. 9th Street between Ave A and 2nd Avenue is full of great little boutiques. Ave A is full of great bars and restaurants. Best to buy Time Out NYC to see whats going on and where. You can't do it all at once! I wouldn't stay in New Jersey, lots of good cheap hotels to stay in that are around $100 a night. Check out the Gershwin on 27th street and Madison (or around there). The rooms are small but chic and affordable. Ford Modeling agency has a dorm there for young models.
