Actually, there are bus routes into The Hill. Getting off Metrolink at the Forest Park station, the #90 Hampton Ave. bus will take you to the Art Museum and Zoo. At the end of the day continue south on the Hampton bus to Arsenal. Walk north a block or two and you'll be in the heart of the hill. Check out

for details and a map.
After dinner you can take the #30 Arsenal or #80 Shaw bus directly back to downtown. Check their website for maps and schedules. Also, when you get to the metro link staion for the first time of the day buy a day pass for $5 from the vending machine. It'll pay for itself after a few trips during the course of the day.

Hubby and I stayed at the Drury Inn at the Arch last spring. It was very nice, much nicer than you would expect from a Drury, and within walking distance of several restaurants and very close to the Arch. We found the Metrolink to be very easy to use, and we aren't even very experienced with public transportation. I'd suggest going to the Missouri History Museum, which is in Forest Park. Very good museum and very close to a Metro stop. Also do see the Arch and the Museum of Westward Expansion and IMAX that is by (actually under) the Arch.

Thanks for the metrolink information, flamingomonkey. I am getting a better feel for the city and anxious to go exploring.
We have to wait until Monday night to try Priceline again, and all the hotel tips will certainly help if our bids are rejected again.
I saw somewhere that "winter warmup" is that weekend, so maybe that's part of the hotel availability problem....?

Well, I finally got a room with Priceline...had to go down to 3-star because the 4-stars were just not biting , even at much higher prices than anyone else had paid lately. I thought maybe the Cardinals' "Winter Warmup" was a factor. Anyway, got the Radisson -- looks like a great location...reviews are very mixed so I am just hoping for the best and will use the money we saved on some nice meals or whatever.
Thanks again for all your information. Since we won't have a car, I will have to save the B&B, winery and Clayton for another time. I'm copying all of your posts into a document and taking it along as my main travel guide.
We leave Thursday and I'm really looking forward to it.
Cheers!
Jayne
