3 days (and 1/4) in San Francisco
 

Hi all! You already helped me a lot with my trip to California next September.
I also read a lot of reports, and downloaded the Stu Dudley's recommendations.

However, since I do love receiving suggestions here, because you have always great ideas, what would you do in 3 days in San Francisco?

It will be my husband (29) and I (31 years old), from Italy, we'll get to SF after a 8 day long trip (Big Sur-LasVegas-DeathValley-MonoLake-Yosemite), more or less in the afternoon of Sunday 27th september, and leaving very early in the morning on Thursday Oct 1st.

We'll be staying at a small hotel in Powell Street.

So, we'll have some sunday afternoon, then monday, tuesday, wednesday.
On Tuesday night, at 7.00, we'll be at the Baseball Game.

Golden Gate Park-Academy of Sciences, DeYoung, Conservatory of Flowers, Japanese Tea Garden, arboretum, Stowe lake, buffalo herds, tulip gardens (not everything, but a smattering depending on your interests)

Museum of Modern Art & Yerba Buena Gardens (in between Union Square & the Giant's stadium. Good for people watching and relaxing.)

North Beach & Chinatown-strolling the neighborhoods, seeing City Lights http://www.citylights.com/ & Spec's http://www.fodors.com/world/north-am...iew-93568.html, Grant Avenue. And Beach Blanket Babylon is pretty fun. http://www.beachblanketbabylon.com/

Also, pick up the free newspapers to see if there are any interesting concerts or plays when you are in town. There are some really unusual offerings at times.

Much of the fun in SF is exploring, and enjoying the general quirkiness.

I usually pick a neighborhood, a couple of sites in that area, a restaurant or two, and try to find something completely new.

Ciao Priscilotta. I have many Italian friends that live in your Northern Italian. Over the decades one activity they all have loved to do when visiting here is to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Sometimes we have walked across the full length of the bridge and other times just half way, to the middle of the bridge, depending on how much time we had. If it is a day with low fog there is not really any point in doing so but September is a beautiful month weather wise to be in San Francisco so that shouldn't be a problem. I welcome you to San Francisco and send wishes that you and your husband have a very special trip throughout your travels.

I second Golden Gate park, even if you end up not going to any of the museums, it's a lovely place to wonder around. Golden Gate bridge is also a must see. Depending on your interest, Mission area has lot of fun, colorful murals. I also like taking the ferry from SF to Sausalito. http://goldengateferry.org/schedules/
Once there, you can walk around, get hamburger and ice cream or rent a bike and ride to Marin Headlands. You get a great view of the city from there.

I like walking tours and the SF City Guides do some really good ones. I know Stu has already recommended these, but I thought I would put an extra plug in for them too :)

All good suggestion,imho. Kailani's gives you a broad view. All of her suggestion are ones you might well enjoy. I feel the way about 3 1/2 days in SF you probably feel when folks come to Rome or Venice for the same amount of time. Stay longer if you ever come again!

Cliff House on Ocean Beach is great if you're looking for a striking view (http://www.cliffhouse.com/) and I always take visitors to Pier 39, on a tour of Alcatraz, and if we have time, on a Ferry ride over to Tiburon for brunch at Sam's (http://www.samscafe.com/)
