3 Day Trip to Atlanta - Road Trip to N. GA, NC, or TN???

So I am going to see my friend (mid-May) in Atlanta, but we wanted to go on a road trip from there. I will be arriving on a Monday morning and will be leaving on a Thursday morning, so basically I have three full days there. One day we will spend in Atlanta and the two other days we wanted to go and experience the great outdoors. Where do you recommend to go? I wouldn't want to drive more than 3 or 4 hours one way. Should we stick to what is in Northern Georgia like Providence Canyon or should we head to the Smoky Mountains or is there another place we are missing? We would like to hike and see beautiful scenery.

Thanks for any guidance!

We love the Blue Ridge and Ellijay areas of the North Georgia Mountains.
There are wonderful rental cabins.
Website for one of them: www.blackbearcabinrentals.com

Yeah I would recommend North Georgia the Chatahoochee National Forrest. You can go here www.fs.fed.us/conf/ for information and to download a complete list of hikes in the National Forrest or for general information about Georgia hiking, I like this web site georgiatrails.com/.

We, too, love the N. Georgia mountains. Try Chickamauga Battlefield, if interested in Civil War history and a beautiful park with lots of cycling opportunities. We find hiking in Fort Mountain State Park to be less crowded and very enjoyable. The waterfall is beautiful at Amicalola State Park, near Ellijay and Blue Ridge. Just hiking and seeing the scenery in N. Georgia makes for a great trip.

If you get to Chattanooga, I highly recommend a stay at Stone Fort Inn.

Enjoy your trip, and please come back to post a trip report!

I will post a trip report when I get back. With gas prices being so high, we may stick around Atlanta after all. My friend is in law school and swamped right now, so we won't get to figure out our plans until I get there -- about 2 weeks from now.
