3 AIRLINES CRASH IN LESS THAN THREE DAYS

A Nigerian airline barrels into a neighborhood on Monday killing about 175 people, this morning an Egyptian airline crashes in Tunisia, and just a moment ago, a Chinese airline crash lands. Wow, they really do come in threes

You know how they say you are more likely to die in a car wreck than an airplane....Kinda makes you wonder lately

Actually, the "car versus plane" is an urban myth. You are twice as likely to die in a car accident as a plane accident.

In 1997, it was 2.8 passengers dead per 100 million miles flown on commerical aircraft. For cars, it was 1.44 deaths per 100 million miles driven.
- source U.S. Department of Transportation

arghhh!

Ok, flip what I just said.

You are twice as like to die on a PLANE as in a CAR - thus negating the myth that plane travel is safer.

Tanya May 7th, 2002 12:57 PM

JPM,
You frightened for a sec. But I guess I should be more afraid since I drive every day.

what? May 7th, 2002 01:00 PM

Over 40,000 people die each year in car wrecks, nowhere near those who die in planes.

jpm May 7th, 2002 01:05 PM

I guess it is because there is a far greater number of miles driven in cars per year as compared to mileage on airlines - think of the millions of cars driving compared to the tens of thousands of flights. This one caught me by surprise as well.

Right now is the safest time to fly...plane crashes come in 3's.

beachbum May 9th, 2002 10:44 AM

Yeah, maybe, but don't tell my wife about the recent crashes. We're off to Kauai in a couple days; she'd freak! Sorta like she did a number of years ago after making the mistake of watching JAWS less than a week before leaving for French Poly.
