2days/2nites in San Francisco
1st timer to San Fran-What's Fun ? Thx
|
Lori,
San Francisco is arguably the most beautiful city in America if not the world. I am say this despite the fact that I am from New York. You must spend more than 2 days to fully appreciate the city. The steep hills of SF and the cable cars make this city very unique.
The things that are fun? Everyone has a different opinion on this but for me I'll list the following as fun activities.
1) riding the cable car and singing "Rice a Roni, a San Francisco treat"
2) walking across the Golden Gate Bridge and admiring the view.
3) The Fisherman's Wharf. Take a cruise around the harbor or to Alcatraz
4) Visit Chinatown
5) Coit Tower
6) must go up to Twin peaks for a spectacular view of the city
7) If you have a car, drive to Sausalito and hang out. It is a lovely village in Marin county and you get a great view of the city.
8) Golden Gate Park.
9)Again, if you have a car, tour the scenic route. I highly recommend it.
10) Dine at the roof top restaurant of Hilton Hotel.
I know you will find yourself returning to SF again as I have returned 10 times since my first visit.
I have to agree with Mike - it's a truly great city. We'll be over from the UK in the summer for the 3rd time in 4 years.

Two caveats to Mike's suggestions (all of which get my vote.) as you've only a limited time

1. Get up early to ride the cable car, otherwise you'll wait a loooong time.

2. Try and book Alcatraz before you go. I think it's a GrayLine service.

To get tickets to Alcatraz, go to:
http://www.blueandgoldfleet.com/

Do get tickets before you arrive and do get up early to ride the cable cars. Enjoy!

You left out Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39 Acquarium, the Cannery, and Ghiradelli Square. Here's the secret to avoiding a long line for a cable car ride: don't try to catch it at Fisherman's Wharf/Cannery/Ghiradelli area. Instead go take a peak at the Hyatt Regency Hotel lobby at Embarcadero Center. Then step outside, turn left, and catch the cable car - it's a lovely ride up California St. to the top of Nob Hill.

Or you can get off the California street cable car at Grant Street and walk through Chinatown and down to North Beach and Fisherman's Wharf. One suggestion tourists often miss is tea at the beautiful Garden Court at the old Sheraton Palace Hotel. You can visit the farmers' market on Saturday morning then tour the wharf area and end up taking a trolley down Market Street to the Palace. It's a bit different. Also, look into Beach Blanket Babylon--it really is fun and combined with dinner in North Beach makes a nice evening. Our visitors bureau has tons of info about the city.
