26th st and 7th ave--Good place to live?
 

Hi everyone,

I'm a 24 year old laidback female doing an internship in NYC and looking for a summer sublet.

I've found a place that meets my dates, budget, and all requirements--except I'm not that familiar with the area. I've heard Chelsea is a good area, but I'm not sure about this far north.

Anyone know about 26th st and 7th Avenue? Is this safe? Good restaurants and bars? Nice place to live?

For starters, Whole Foods - a block
away runs from 25-26 Sts. You are
also l block from FIT...there's plenty of restaurants in the area, banks, &
2 supermarkets. On 23rd is a movie
theatre, Haagen Daz & more restaurants....all in
all a great area.
ALMOST FORGOT: Bars: On 7th
there's Mustang Sally & Mustang Harry and The Triple Crown where
my company has helped their bottom
line.
Good Subway Line: The 1 & 9 stop
at 23rd & 28 Sts.

I didn't think it'd be as happening a place to live as Greenwich Village (where I just can't seem to find an affordable non-sketchy place for my dates), but this sounds better than I thought.

I would say your only issue in this neighborhood might be noise. Does it have a/c? If not, forget it.

If you want to see what's nearby, go to one of the map sites like mapquest, get a map of the address and then you can click for bars and restaurants nearby. It's not perfect but gives you an idea.

Where will you be working (general location)?

The apt will have A/C. It's a "doorman building" so hopefully shouldn't be too shabby (the online pictures of the inside of the apt seem nice).

I suppose I would have to pack my earplugs (which wouldn't be a big deal; I use them now as the apt I live in has paper thin walls and inconsiderate tenants).

I will be working on Columbus Ave near the Lincoln Center--so it should be quite easy I would think to take the 1-line up there?

You will have a very easy commute on the 1/9 since everything is on the west side. That area is fine, although the blocks north lack personality, the blocks south are great.

You will be right across the street from Fashion Inst. of Technology. Some of the area consists of low-rent offices, but there's a new Chipotle right on the corner of 26th and 7th, and a subway stop, corner of 28th, that will whisk you to Columbus Circle in no time flat.

It sounds fine as long as you don;t let the noise bother you - always an issue living on an avenue rather than a side street. But eventually you'll get used to the police and fire sirens and the garbage trucks empyting dumpsters at 3am and sleep right through it.

it's perfectly safe, and the location is great, but it's also known for the highest rents.

I wouldn't stress about the noise until you see the apartment. Your room might not overlook 7th Ave, which will cut down on noise quite a bit. So will being on a high floor and running the A/C at night.
I would also recomment www.sheckys.com as a fabulous resource for looking up bars in your hood or any other area in the city.

My dilemma (and hence my original post) is that I'm trying to secure a sublet before I arrive (I live in NC and won't be getting there till my internship begins). Thus, I'm relying a lot on pictures and talking to others about the location.

I've finally secured a place to live! King St. & MacDougal St., a 2br/2ba with exposed brick, hardwoods, w/d, A/C, and a roomie who's my age and seems nice.
