2007 trip please help
 

We are travelling to alaska May 2007, we have 5 weeks. trip so far any suggestions
Ketchikan 3 days,
Ferry to Juneau,1 night
Glacier bay 1 night
Juneau 5 days- Glacier(including hike & dogsledding), Tracey arm trip, Junea sightseeing, skagway train.3 weeks driving from Anchorage will include Seward Kenai,Denali fairbanks glenallen valdez back to anchorage
Has anyone any suggestions/changes. Any accommodation suggestions, things to do in the trip. we won't be doing any specific bear veiwing. Best car hire in ANC any deals available

Try Fox Rent A Car <http://www.foxrentacar.com/> in Anchorage.

Keep in mind that all car rentals here are expensive, but Fox may be a little cheaper. I have used them in California several times and can honestly say that they do a satisfactory job and, most importantly, are cheaper. One way they hold costs down is to have an off-airport location. However, with a free shuttle, it doesn't matter much.

Will you be there the whole month of May, part of April, part of June? You should check opening dates on all places you'd like to go and any tours you plan to take. With 5 weeks, I hope you will try to get to Homer on the Kenai peninsula.

Oops, forgot to mention two things that will be of great help in the early planning stages of a trip of this scope.

we commence our trip in KTN staying at the black bear inn any information on this inn looks great on the internet
need accom in JNU, ANC, SEWARD, KENAI, HOMMER DENALI STATE PARK &DENALI, FAIRBANKS & then on the circle route to Valdez back to ANC

5 weeks in Alaska will give you plenty of time for all you're planning. i personlly think that the best way to travel in the middle section of Alaska is by RV- there are plenty of camps for RV's and you don't have to worry about accommodations and packing up every night. for ideas of what to do in Alaska try

(907) 235-6357. Their web site mentions that they are the only 3 diamond rated AAA accommodation in Homer.

We stayed there several years ago and found the food to be quite good, the rooms large and the view outstanding.

We stayed in Kenai with family and thought it was a decent location for exploring about 1 1/2 hours to Seward in one direction, 1 1/2 hours to Homer in the other. We still stayed overnight in Seward (wouldn't recommend our b&b) and wished we had stayed overnight in Homer and spent more time there (we did an overnight to Seldovia from Homer and stayed at the Boardwalk Hotel). Although we enjoyed exploring the Kenai area unless you have specific things to do and places you want to see in the Kenai/Soldotna area, it wasn't our favorite area. We planned our 3 week trip around weekends and events. Kenai has a terrific 4th of July parade but you won't be there then. If you quilt, Robin Place Fabrics sponsors a wonderful quilt show in mid-June. We enjoyed a dinner show in Soldotna with Hobo Jim but he also plays bars in Homer and Seward. Unfortunately there was too much to do Father's Day weekend so we had to miss the Plow Day at the transportation museum in Wasilla. Loved the Alaska Garden Gate B&B in Palmer, check her website for things to do in the area. Independence Mine is a must see. Hatcher Pass is closed before July 4 though. Start reading the Anchorage Daily News on their website at www.adn.com and check events that will be taking place during your visit. Before our last trip there was interesting information about an animal at the Sealife Center in Seward. Hope you have a great trip, 5 weeks will be wonderful. It seemed it was a little early for salmon to be on restaurant menus but halibut was great and we grilled some freshly caught salmon.

I love Juneau, but unless you're a big hiker I'm thinking 5 days there might be a bit much? Have you thought about adding a couple days in Sitka to your itinerary? It's really a breathtaking area--some say even more so than Juneau. They have a fabulous totem pole park and a beautiful little Russian church. If you go, be sure to try a piece of their famous airport pie.

While on the Kenai Peninsula you should take a look at visiting Kenai Landing in Kenai. It's a renovated 100 year old cannery that has a lot to offer.
And my favorite place to stay in Homer is at Land's End Lodges. Homer is the teasure of the Kenai Peninsula!

On your way to Homer, be sure to stop and see (and take pictures of) the old Russian church in Ninilchik.It's very scenic!

It's also a little off the highway, but once you get to "town" you'll see a general store on the right-hand side of the road. They can give you precise driving directions.

Ninilchik is breathtaking. I would highly recommend stopping there.

Try offering the toursaver book on ebay. Frankly, it may be difficult to get your price.
