2 week US trip ( covering Orlando / Washington / NYC )
2 week US trip in Aug 2016 ( Must visit - Orlando / Washington / NYC etc ) .
Pls. suggest an itinerary for 2 weeks covering above destinations , beside this any other destination -- with Children 9 and 15 yrs .
We are open to road trip from Orlando to Washington , with overnight stay if its worth doing it or else will fly down to Washington and then go to New York and fly back to home .
Please advise :
- If we can keep the above itinerary
- if we can add another destination .
- Road trip is recommended ?
- No. of days we should spend at each destination .
Many thanks in advance for your assistance .
Kind Regards
Tarun .

We are doing a similar trip but in Dec/January. We are flying into NYC, taking the train to Washington DC staying there for 3 1/2 days , then flying to Orlando. It depends on what you what to do in Orlando. We have two days planned for Universal Studios, and 4 days for Disneyworld. The remaining time spend in New York. You will be losing days travelling between places also.

With only 2 weeks I would suggest flying between dc and Orlando, make sure you choose Reagan National as it's a lot easier and cheaper than Dulles, JetBlue fly the route and they are pretty good.
If you look at driving I have found the drop off fees to be substantial for the same route.
DC is my favourite city in the US, so much to see and do, and the majority of them are free, whereas Orlando is incredibly expensive for the parks and the outlet shopping no longer provides the discounts they once did

Much better to fly from Orlando to DC and then take Amtrak from DC to NYC. Buy tickets at least a couple of weeks in advance to get the best discounted rates.
Assuming you have substantial luggage get a Red Cap at Union Station In DC - and have them contact the Red Caps in NYC to have one meet your train. They get you to the platform first (others have to wait for track announcement and then race to the gate and down the steps or escalators hauling their luggage) and deal with your luggage up and down the escalators. and if you get on the train first you have a much better chance of getting seats together (there are no seat reservations on Amtrak).
You should be looking for hotels now - since the best chance for deals is usually in advance.
I would want at least 5 days (6 nights) for NYC and 4 days (5 nights) for DC.

If you stay at the Hard Rock Hotel, Royal Pacific Hotel, or Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Studios you will get express access for most rides and shows plus early entry to the parks. A one night stay gets you express access for two days....all day the day you check in and all day the day you check out.

@tchadha: That's your itinerary and all you can comfortably fit into two weeks, which gives you only 3 or 4 days in each place considering all the time you lose by moving around. There's so much to do in each of these destinations that I wouldn't include a road trip, but you can certainly do day-trips in all of these. You could go to Tampa or Cape Canaveral from Orlando; you could go upstate and walk the Walkway over the Hudson from NYC (or go to the outlet mall at Woodbury Common); you can go see Mount Vernon and Alexandria from DC.

Since the 6th and 9th are travel days, the 1st is arrival day and 15th is departure day, you can not count them as being anywhere. Realistically, you have
NYC, 4 days
DC, 2 days
Orlando, 5 days
I would not try to go anyplace else in Florida in the heat, unless it is to the beach for a day.
DC will be hot too, but 2 days is very short for all there is in DC, so take a day from Orlando and add it to DC.

Hey, Doug, the itinerary is the one the OP has currently.
I recommended the same as you, take a day from Orlando and add it to DC. Giving
DC, 3 days,
Orlando, 4 days
Also, personally, depending on flight times and costs, I would look at
Flying from NY to Orlando, then
Flying from Orlando to DC
But would also depend on where you are coming from, and best flights from/to your home airport. Sometimes there is a big difference.
