2 nights at Grand Canyon.....
My husband and I will have 2 nights (in Nov) at the Grand Canyon (South rim). Any suggestions of where to stay and what not to miss? thanks, jacki

if you are physically upto it, spend one day hiking down, spend the night at the bottom of grand canyon, and hike back up the next day ... there's also some caverns to explore on the road to vegas from GC, and on the way to flagstaff there's sun crater national monument/park which is neat to see the lava tubes (it's like craters of the moon, but the ice caves are now blocked of so you can't go in)

basically there are 2 things to do at the GC.....hike or go to the look-out areas and stare at the canyon. we hiked bright angel trail which was OK (covered with donkey poop though). I liked the kaibab trail better. <BR>as far as places to stay...we used the bright angel trail which was OK for the money (about $45 in '95). the bed was too small for 2 and there were wooden floors so you could hear people walking around in the next room or outside the door. we had the full-bath type room but it didn't have a shower just a tub.

I stayed at El Tovar, located on the south rim - rustic, yet charming and elegant - had dinner (food was okay) in the restaurant - worth it for the view -table by the window and the sun was setting...there's also the Bright Angel Lodge - rustic and casual...The Kachina and Thunderbird are well suited for families...the Maswik Lodge is spread out over several acres...and then there's the Phantom Ranch - the only lodging in the park that is located below the rim - it has dormitory style rooms and cabins...if you like to be comfy and cozy I'd go with El Tovar...it dates back to 1905 and is on the National Register of Historic Places - it has also hosted many presidents, etc. I've only been there during the summer so I'm not sure about availability in November, but there's a shuttle type bus that goes around the south rim and you can get on and off at various views...Call 1-866-467-2757 for in park reservations and information...hope this info is of use to you
