2 night stay in New York city hotel

We (2 couples) will be returning to New York City for a 2 night stay in October at the end of our 6 week trip.
We will have already spent 7 nights in New York City in September staying at the WestInn.
We got a great rate because of the long stay. However we could not get a good rate for our 2 nights in October.

So now we are looking for somewhere to stay. Our last 2 days will mainly consist of some shopping for the girls. And maybe some time in Central Park. Hopefully we will have ticked off our must sees in the previous 7 nights.

Any hotel recommendations? I have been looking at the Hampton Inn Times Square (previously mentioned on Fodors) the rate is about $630US for the 2 nights with no cancellation. We do not need anything too flash but somewhere clean and in a good location.

Are you looking for one room for 4 adults - or 2 separate rooms? And is the $630 per night or for both nights.

October is much further into high season - and yes prices will be more.

The Newton - a reliable budget property on the upper west side - has advance purchase prices of about $280 per night for a double double room - or slightly more for a double queen room. It;s in a great mid/upscale residential neighborhood and right on top of two subway lines - so easy access to the rest of the city (2 stops to Times Square). Only a couple of blocks from Central Park and with tons of mid/modest restaurants of every possible ethnicity on the avenues.

But they do tend to book fully fairly far in advance - so if you are ready to commit do take advantage of the discounted rates.

If you don't mind riding the subway a stop or two to get into Manhattan, you can stay at the Country Inn and Suites in Long Island City for well under $200 per night (sometimes much less). The hotel is at the confluence of every major subway line into Queens and between 1 and 3 stops from Midtown, so about a 5- to 10-minute ride.

However, the flat fare to JFK will not apply from that hotel, so you'll want to arrange a car service to the airport if you stay in Queens.

What nights of the week? Staying in the Financial District -- near World Trade Center and for bargain shopping galore -- Century 21 -- could be quite reasonable, especially on weekends.
Millenium Hilton on Church (right at World Trace Center or Downtown W, for example, are often super bargains on weekends. Get something you can cancel. I'd suspect you can get a better price much closer to your arrival.

Thank you for your suggestions.
Sorry I did not explain my comments clearly.

Yes we are 2 couples but we will each require our own room. The other couple would rather not stay too far out.
The US$630 I quoted was for 2 nights for each room. ($315 per room)

Unfortunately our Australian dollar is falling against the US dollar. So for example US$300 will cost us $405 Aus dollars.

I'd go for the cheaper rooms in Queens. That's not too far out from Manhattan. In fact, Long Island City is closer to most of Manhattan than the Financial District is.

Of course, the Financial District is becoming a much more trendy and happening place with the opening of the new World Trade Center and the surrounding shops and restaurants, so there's a strong argument to be made for staying down there. But it will be at least $100 per room per night more expensive than any hotel in Queens.

Gee. Tonight the Hampton Inn Financial District is $149. The Millenium Hilton at World Trade Center is $159. Which hotels are less than $49 in Queens?

Seriously, I often see the Millenium Hilton on special for around $129 or so, sometimes even less, especially on weekends. Of course, admittedly you won't get it for that booking 8 months ahead, but they have great last minute deals if not full. That's why I suggest getting something you can cancel, but keep checking.

Someone asked the nights we would be staying.
I forgot to say in my last post.

We will be staying Sunday 18th Oct and Monday 19th Oct. We fly home to Australia on the Tuesday.

So the Newton would fit your price and is still in a quite central area of Manhattan.

No way I would stay in Long Island City (definitely mixed use are with limited services) than a great area of Manhattan with tons of restaurants and shops and easy access to all of Manhattan.

The Financial District often has good deals on weekends - but also much less in the way of restaurants and services.

Hi all thank you for all your help and suggestions.

I have managed to book a hotel that we are happy with and I wanted to get back to you on our results.

It is the Salisbury Hotel. I got a great deal through expedia called the "deal of the day" and got 2 1 B/R King suites for US$520 each for a 2 night stay. Today the sale price is back up to $628 per room for a 2 night stay.

I know it is an older hotel but the rooms are a good size and there will be plenty of space for us to repack our bags for our flight home. We like the location as it is close to Central Park - we want to go there on the sunday and I think it is in a quite good location for shopping.
