2 days and 1 night...

My husband and I are hoping to escape NYC this labor day (I know it's late and traffic will be heavy) we will leave early on 9/3 and have an afternoon/evening of sight seeing/dining and spend the night on Sunday 9/3/06. Then we will spend day on Monday and leave around 4pm. We are looking for rocky coasts and water and light houses and quaint town. Also, since we will be driving a long way to get there we want to be able to do most sight-seeing on foot and don't want to worry about parking...not sure if we will go to Cape Cod or RI. Please suggest...our ideal trip would include beautiful views of nature. Good food. Light shopping. Lighthouses/whale watching...nice hotel (we can spend up to $300 for a night)...I know it's a lot to ask...Block Island? Falmouth? Newport? Chatham? I really don't know the area...thanks

Uh.... I really find it hard to believe that you will be able to secure ANY accommodation in those areas for this weekend (!) no matter what your price range.... seriously. A few weeks ago, friends of mine were looking at this weekend for Newport or the Vineyard (with a budget that was quite high) and could not secure a thing.

Oh... and by the way. During "big" holiday weekends such as this one, most (if not all) hotels, B&Bs, etc. will require a two-night minimum. You might be out of luck on this one, I'm afraid.

there are hotels available for one night in several locations on Cape. that's why I need recommendations -- best area to go and areas that would be near enough by so that we could drive and park and walk around. Here's what's available:
Inn on the Square and Admiraly Inn in Falmouth. A few places in S. Yarmouth and W. Yarmouth. Hyannis (I think that's too touristy). Bourne. West Barnstable. Yarmouth Port.

Newport:
Inn at Newport Beach

can you recommend any area/hotel?

OK, I now see this post, as opposed to your Cape Cod one. Newport definitely fits the bill on everything you are looking for except for Whale Watching.

The Inn at Newport Beach is actually across the beach in Middletown, and a short drive or trolley ride to downtown Newport. Rocky Coastline if you take the 10 mile drive, you can take a tour of Rose Island lighthouse if it's available. But you can look at Castle Hill Light, or Goat Island Light on your own.

Didn't know that you were open to other options other than the Cape. For a short 2 day trip with everything centrally located, I would definitely pick Newport.

Also, just did a quick search on Hotwire. You can get the 4* Hyatt Goat Island for $175.00/night as well as a 1 bedroom condo (probably the Fairfield Inn on the Harbor) for $179.00. That probably means you can get it a little cheaper on priceline too.....

Thank you so much milemarker0! We just booked a night at the Hyatt on Goat Island on Hotwire!

Glad I could help....it and Newport should be just what you're looking for.

It's not too bad of a drive from NYC either.

Check out www.gonewport.com for some ideas of things to do.
