2 days after Glouster....Maine?

Will be in Glouster and have 2 days before heading into Boston and would love some advice as to whether it makes any sense to go up into Maine.
I have been to Essex, Ipswich, Marblehead and that area north of Boston so thought this would be a good plan. I do hate to end up in just "touristy" towns but with gas prices do not want to drive far. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Portsmouth, NH as a base. Kittery, York, Kennebunkport, ME; Dover, Exeter, and Lake Winnepesaukee, NH as possible day trips.

Don't know when you are going, but further north you will run into prime tourist season (i.e., hard to find a place to stay) if it is before Labor Day.

We are in the York area and it is only 1 hour 15 minutes from Boston. There is lots to do in this area without going any further north. It does depend on when as far as getting accommodations, busy-ness,etc...

I think the Portsmouth, Kittery, York suggestions are great. York is more of a beach town and fun even if touristy but if you check a calendar of events for Portsmouth, there are probably some great music/theater events going on. Plus I love the boat trips out of Portsmouth.

Will be going right after Labor Day so hoping accomodations will not be a problem.

Thanks for the suggestions

Ogunquit & York are great, but since you've done and are doing coastal time...consider Alton Bay New Hampshire or Sebago Lake Maine. The lakes areas are just gorgeous in September.
