1st time New Orleans - what to do?

Just booked a last minute trip to New Orleans - leaving Wednesday for 5 nights....

Love great food, pastries, wine, jazz....

Like to explore - museums, parks, walking, biking.

Also, my mom is 50% Acadian, so lots of "cousins" headed to Louisiana (I never met any as they are distant), but interested in that part of my history.

Any suggestions appreciated!

We are going next month. I have lined up some walking tours-

If you're at all interested in WWII history, the National World War II Museum is sensational.

We did the Freetoursbyfoot walking tour of the Garden District. You only walk about a mile but we enjoyed it, went to one of the original cemeteries, saw some wonderful houses that had been renovated, and the tour guide we had knew his stuff.

I would have liked to do the one in the French Quarter too but ran out of time.

Go to Frenchmen St to hear jazz. Lots of cafes and clubs with bands playing each night. Just wander down the street and drop in when you hear one you like.

We spent a lot of time at Maison. Go to Preservation Hall for old-style Dixieland Jazz, an absolute treat.

We drove out one day and toured a couple of the plantations, I think Oak Alley was one. Or you can take a tour as well.
