1st time Mardi Gras 09

A friend and I are coming to NO for the first time for Mardi Gras in 09 arriving on a Monday and leaving on Thursday. Where is the best reasonable place to stay that is close to the parade route. Any other tips will be appreciated.

You may already be late in getting reservations - lots of people book year to year and have already scooped up good rooms.
I can't help you with hotels, but can suggest you try NOLA.com for the Mardi Gras forum. They're already gearing up for Carnival and can answer probably anything you want to know.
Good luck and have a good time!

I found this site that lists all the parades and has maps with their locations that might be a help to you.

I think I can be of some assistance here...

I was just there for Mardi Gras 07 and we stayed at the Sheraton on Canal Street. We stepped right of the hotel doors right on to the parade route. It was GREAT!! It was nice because we could walk back to the hotel in about 4-5 mins from the French Quarter but it was far enough away where we could take a break from the action if needed.

Here is the link

This was one of the more affordable hotels and it's nice. Also, don't rent a car if your intention is to just do the Mardi Gras thing. We did and it stayed parked at the Casino lot for 4 days...wasted a couple hundred dollars!

Hope this helps

A couple of points to note:

You will be in New Orleans during the madness, but also during the "days after", which I liken to a hangover after a night out on the town. Thus, you need to pick a place that will be happening during Mardi Gras, yet not let your window view be of the trash leftover from Mardi Gras.

In other words, I don't recommend Bourbon Street or the French Quarter. I'd probably recommend either the Warehouse District or St. Charles Ave. St. Charles Ave is right on the parade route, whereas the Warehouse District is only a couple of blocks away.

For a good hotel in the Warehouse District, try out Renaissance Arts. I don't know your price range, but at that time of year, it doesn't matter - everything will be expensive, so go for location.

The parades do not go through the Quarter. Wherever you are, if you are not staying on a parade route, you will be looking for a bathroom. I reserved our rooms last April with no deposit. Right now, they will want you to pre-pay everything. We have stayed at the Staybridge Suites, Queen and Crescent and Wyndham all Pricelines for about $110 a night. We also either fly in or park the car at the airport. The shuttle is $40 each way which saves you worrying about the car getting broken into and paying $30 a night for parking. Will you becoming on Lundi Gras and laeving the next Thursday or the prior Monday? There are parades and people partying for a solid 2 weeks. The local parades are pretty good, we have always had fun in the pre-Mardi Gras week.

The Renaissance Arts in the Warehouse District is a good hotel away from the madness but close to restaurants (Tommy, Emeril's, Couchon).
