What can we expect to see? Where do you recommend staying (eating). Do we go through the Smoky Mountains and is it a hard drive?

Stop in Asheville, NC

How long do you want to take? It is approximately a 12 hour drive. you could theoretically do it in a day, and no, it isn't a hard drive.
South on I75 to Knoxville--take I640 around Knox. I40 to Asheville. You will go through a VERY curvy but beautiful road through the Pigeon River Gorge. Just pay attention.
Asheville would be a good stop--it is about 7-8 hours from Cincy.
I26 south from Asheville to Charleston and Beaufort.

By all Means: go to Griffin Market. Best Italian food south of NYC! And a million dollar wine collection.
