1st Hawaii trip,?Kihei destination-laid back beachfront,local night life
Kihei has been recommended for nice laid back beaches. We will be staying close to 2 weeks. We want a beachfront condo where we can mostly relax, maybe snorkel, try paddle boarding. Some local night life and a good restaurant or two. Take a day to hike, a day to do some native shopping, etc, no pressure.
There will be 2-5 of us from both US coasts and Europe over the 2 week stay. We plan on Spring 2014.
We'd like to be able to bbq and lay by the pool sometimes.
Any advice?

I've never been keen on Kihei, it's too flat, dry & dusty for my liking, although south kihei is better, the closer you get to Wailea.
Have been to Maui 3 times from Europe, love to stay in Napili where there are several beachfront low rise condos on the beautiful Napili beach, close to Lahaina and Ka'anapali for restaurants & a bit of nightlife. We loved to watch the turtles in the evenings. I have no idea what "native shopping" is, but the term native does not sit well with me. Do you mean simply local shopping? There are farmer's markets if that's what you mean.

I like Hale Pau Hana in South Kihei. Directly on a fine swimming beach with good snorkeling at either end. There are barbecues overlooking the ocean
Across the street there are numerous restaurants including Da Kitchen which serves local cuisine.
There are very few beachfront condos, most are across the street from the water.

Kihei is very popular and there are some very nice beaches down that way, but not many of the condo developments are beachside. Like Odin, it's not my location of choice in Kauai, but in my case, it's because to me it doesn't seem "tropical" - actually not attractive at all. If that doesn't matter to you, then there are a gazillion condos to choose from. You can see where they are located relative to the beach on this map.

Kihei Caffe is my favorite breakfast spot on Maui! We also enjoyed Cafe O'Lei, Da Kitchen (try the bigger one in Kahului too), Local Boys Shave ice, and Koiso sushi bar.
Me and my husband like Kihei, it's very casual, laid-back, convenient. It's not "ritzy" like Wailea or Kaanapali, but we like that vibe too. Lots of condos there...so you have plenty to choose from, try vrbo.com, dwellable, flipkey, homeaway, etc.
Shopping wise, what are you looking for? Kihei will have your usual surf-y, Hawaiian beach wear stores. Shops at Wailea and Whaler's Village will have more upscale stores. There is a more local shopping mall near Kahului where they have Macy's and the like.

Wow, thanks for all the first hand thoughts. I didn't mean to offend using the term native. What I meant was local culture and artisan type shopping. As in indigenous. Whalers Market sounds promising, I will Google that. Thanks tifa2276, and for the condo suggestions.
We are looking for tropical, especially after a NW winter. The topography matters too so thanks for that info, sf7307 and Odin.

If you're planning on visiting during whale season (Jan. - Mar.), get your car(s) and lodging booked now.
South Maui has better ocean conditions in winter/spring; West Maui is better in summer.
It's more convenient to tour Maui from a base in South Maui than from West.
All of Maui's top hotels are in Wailea except Ritz in Kapalua. Nice condos in Wailea and South Maui (near the Kamaole Beach Parks). "Beachfront" will be more expensive, and with two weeks, you will probably be out sampling different beaches anyway.
You'll find lots of "Made in China" junk, so look carefully for Made on Maui or at least in Hawaii. There are several artists in Makawao (Upcountry), in Paia, in Lahaina. Martin & MacArthur has nice things (Shops At Wailea).
I like this site for South Maui condos because the manager has weeded out the 'dogs': www.mauiownercondos.com We could help more if we knew your general dates and lodging budget. How large a condo do you need -- or will you be booking more than one?
