if your boys are into sports, specifically baseball, a tour of Chase Field in Phoenix is fun.http://arizona.diamondbacks.mlb.com/ari/ballpark/tours/

Also, a visit to SLIDE ROCK STATE PARK is great. There is a natural water slide made of rocks.... my boys loved it. We traveled there as a mid-day stop from Sedona to Grand Canyon. http://azstateparks.com/Parks/SLRO/kids.html

If you're going to Sedona the pink jeep tour is a must! https://www.pinkjeeptourssedona.com/broken-arrow-tour/

fpk1005 Feb 26th, 2015 04:48 AM

also, when in Bryce make sure you do the mule/horseback guided ride through the canyon. A "cowboy" leads the ride. Wonderful way to see the Canyon and much, much easier than Grand Canyon trail. One of the most memorable moments from our trip.

emalloy Feb 26th, 2015 04:59 AM

Good idea to do the second night at MV. The views from Far View lodge are wonderful. I'm guessing that you will have a cooler full of safe lunch/snack/etc food, but the Metate Room at Far view was quite good the last time we were there. Check the menu choices carefully, but they tend to use some local sources. Otherwise, there are cafeteria type places near there and near the museum that is close to the path for Spruce Tree House.

Spruce Tree house is one you can tour by yourself. Be sure to take the mesa top loop and stop at the sites on the way.

Sounds like the trip is shaping up nicely.

WhereAreWe Mar 1st, 2015 04:57 PM

This website has some good ideas for family friendly hikes and activities in Utah. There are a couple dino track hikes listed too.

http://climb-utah.com/family.htm

I don't see much talk about the amount of snow/ice at some of the higher elevations. Bryce will still have snow, the upper elevations of Zion will too and for sure some of the trails in Colorado will be covered in snow.

StantonHyde Mar 2nd, 2015 07:23 AM

Actually, this year there is NO SNOW. The least snowy winter on record in Utah. Bryce Winter fest in February was a complete bust. People went down planning to ride their bicycles vs. skiing. Unless it snows like gang busters in March and April, there will be no issue with snow. We went to Moab over Pres Day Weekend. Soldier Summit on Route 6--very little to no snow. It is going to be a scary water situation for us this summer.

WhereAreWe Mar 2nd, 2015 09:25 AM

I would still advise the OP to check on trail conditions close to their travel dates. There's a lot of winter left at the higher elevations.

Bryce Canyon is closed today due to a winter storm.

Hi all!

I'm so glad that people are still adding their opinions! Thank you, thank you!

FPK1005 - with regard to the Mule/Horseback guided ride, do you think it's appropriate with 2 young boys? It sounds fantastic, but neither of my sons have been on horseback before. Would like your thoughts.

Thanks to those who mentioned snow! I can't believe I never thought of the possibility. We'll keep our eyes/ears open closer to the date.

I'm quite disappointed because I tried to get us tickets to do the Fiery Furnace in Arches and they are already all sold out for our dates! Do many more spots open up closer to the date, do you think?

We're still deciding on our options for the Colorado portion of our trip. As I said above, we've decided to stay 2 nights in Mesa Verde to give us extra time there. While I know that there were some comments as to losing the "focus" of our trip, I do think the overall focus is to simply see the most beautiful things (that aren't too out of our way) while on our trip. In Utah, those things are the NPs we're visiting. In Colorado, definitely Mesa Verde. To be honest, there weren't a ton of suggestions outside of that (except for Sand Dunes, which look amazing, but don't seem worthy of 3-4 days and then take us way out of the way of anything else that we'd want to see). We definitely have Rockies in Canada - but certainly (and unfortunately!) not near us in Toronto : ) So if Telluride/Ouray has beautiful scenery and hikes, that sounds wonderful. And from what I've read, the Million Dollar Highway is "one of the most spectacular drives in the US" - do people agree?

So we were thinking of driving from Mesa Verde, up the Million Dollar Highway, to Telluride and Ouray to do some hiking. We were also thinking of stopping by the Black Canyon of the Gunnison - do people think this is worth it? How much time should we estimate?

Finally, during our time in one of the NPs, do people recommend any boating? We can't white-water raft with the kids obviously, but do people recommend a jet-boat experience or any other type of boating that people might know is available? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Jenn

WhereAreWe Mar 3rd, 2015 01:53 PM

Black Canyon of the Gunnison is pretty cool but it looks like it is out of the way if you're also going to Great Sand Dunes. There isn't a lot of hiking at Black Canyon, the canyon walls are far too steep for normal tourists to hike down into the canyon and the trails above the rim aren't super scenic.

Arches is only taking reservations for morning tours and their website says they may add afternoon tours if they have enough staff, but you will have to purchase tickets in person. Since you have several days in that area you may luck out and get tickets.

http://www.nps.gov/arch/planyourvisit/programs.htm
"Afternoon tours in 2015 will be offered as staff is available. Tickets for afternoon tours will be sold in person at the front desk up to seven days in advance. Tours sell out quickly; stop by the visitor center as soon as you arrive in Moab to inquire about the next available spaces."

alwaysafrica Mar 3rd, 2015 02:29 PM

The website said that everything is booked until June 29th! Can this possibly be true?! You're right though, with a few days in the area, we'll check in there and see if they've added any time slots.

We've actually decided against Great Sand Dunes, because it's out of the way of everything else. And so we're going to go directly from Mesa Verde, up the Million Dollar Hwy to Telluride and Ouray and then may do BC of the Gunnison once we're heading towards Denver. Anything else you would recommend in that area?

StantonHyde Mar 3rd, 2015 06:09 PM

alwaysafrica--While Fiery Furnace is really awesome, I still say my favorite hike in Arches is Delicate Arch. Gets me every time!!! So definitely check to see if there are slots but it will be ok if there are not!

SaltysMom Mar 3rd, 2015 06:34 PM

Having been a mom of an active boy who liked to "do" stuff - I would suggest coming back to Denver through Glenwood Springs and staying at the Hotel Colorado. You can swim in the Glenwood Hot Springs pool in ANY weather and there are some mellow raft trips (even in late May) that start in Glenwood. On the way in to Denver, you can stop in Breckenridge and ride the alpine slide, the chairlifts, and maybe take in a bike ride along their miles of bike paths. In Breck, there is also the Country Boy Mine tour that my son and his cousins thought was the coolest thing ever! You are doing lots of parks and seeing lots of beautiful scenery, but your boys may want to do some regular "kid things" too!

alwaysafrica Mar 3rd, 2015 08:05 PM

SaltysMom, we absolutely love your ideas! We've just spent the last hour looking up places in those areas and it looks great. Our boys would be thrilled. Unfortunately, we're going to be there only one short week before a lot of the attractions (and slides, etc. at the hot springs) open on Memorial Day weekend, but that's okay. Here's a tentative plan -- what do you think?

Day 11 - 2nd day in Mesa Verde (stay at the Far View Lodge)

Day 12 - drive the Million Dollar Highway and stay in Telluride (2 hours from MV to Telluride). Maybe we'll have time for a late-afternoon short hike in the area.

Day 13 - leave Telluride mid-day (perhaps fitting in a short hike in the morning) and head into Glenwood Springs. Stay at Hotel Colorado. Enjoy the pools etc.

Day 14 - Go to the Adventure Park in Glenwood Springs. Stay another night at Hotel Colorado.

Day 15 - enjoy the pools in the morning and then drive 1.5 hours to Breckenridge. Do the Country Mine Tour. Any suggestions on where to stay?

Day 16 - in the morning, drive the 1.5 hours into Denver. Have lunch and head to the airport (as I said earlier, I know that we'll be missing a lot of great stuff in Denver, but we've decided to leave Denver out of this trip...). Flight home at 6:30pm.

Thoughts? : )

Gretchen Mar 4th, 2015 04:14 AM

Can't remember now, but hope you'll look for some dinosaur things in Utah--or around Gunnison, I think. Your kids are just the right age-- older, not so much.

DebitNM Mar 4th, 2015 05:50 AM

"Day 12 - drive the Million Dollar Highway and stay in Telluride (2 hours from MV to Telluride)."

No, not 2 hours.

First of all, it will take close to 45 minutes just to exit the park.
If you go through Durango, then onto the Million Dollar Highway to get to Telluride, it is closer to 4 hours once you are on CO 160.

If you went on CO 145, it would about 2 hours. It's a pretty ride that way too. Some nice viewing stops along the way.

wtm003 Mar 4th, 2015 06:09 AM

I can't remember your exact dates, but I don't think the Country Boy Mine opens until late May.

alwaysafrica Mar 4th, 2015 06:51 AM

I definitely knew that the MV to Telluride would take more than the stated 2 hours (particularly because we'll also be stopping to take tons of photos I'm sure). Good to know about the 4 hours to start.

We're really happy with the new additions for some kid-friendly things on our way to Denver. That said, we don't want to end the trip with a complete 180. And so we're hoping to fit in some good hiking in the newly-chosen areas. Any recommended hikes (good with kids) in the areas of Glenwood Springs and/or Breckenridge?

Gretchen, you're absolutely right. In my newfound plan, I totally forgot about our plan to go to Woodland Park to the Dinosaur Museum! : ( It definitely is too far to make it there with our current plan. I'm going to peek around to see what else re dinosaurs we can fit in. It's a must for our boys for sure.

alwaysafrica Mar 4th, 2015 06:53 AM

Awwww... you're right wtm003. Country Boy Mine is only open on weekdays until May 23rd. And as it so happens, we're going to be there only on a Saturday : (

emalloy Mar 4th, 2015 07:09 AM

There was a place fairly close to Denver that had a few dino tracks, and I totally forget the name of it but it was pretty close to Red Rocks park/amphitheater which would be fun for the kids to see and try running up and down the stairs like the fit Colorado folks do.

WhereAreWe Mar 4th, 2015 09:34 AM

Are you driving through Grand Junction on your way from Telluride to Glenwood Springs?
I believe there are some dino things in either Grand Junction or Fruita, which is 20-30 miles away. Possibly a museum? Colorado National Monument is also right there if you have time, although it isn't as spectacular as the parks in Utah.

alwaysafrica Mar 4th, 2015 10:29 AM

We're excited because we decided to stay, while in Bryce Canyon, at the Bryce Canyon Lodge within the park (rather than at Canyon Pines). We just got confirmation of our reservation - and the place looks fantastic.

We've also booked one of our three nights in Moab in a "tent" at Moab Under Canvas. Sounds really unique and we're looking forward to it. For the other two nights, we've rented a 3BR town home, so we'll be able to spread out a bit for the 2 nights (i.e., our boys will have their own bedrooms, which should help them catch up on some sleep : ).

WhereAreWe, great suggestion. We are indeed going through Grand Junction and so we will stop at the Dinosaur Journey Museum. We'll also still be doing the Mill Canyon Dinosaur Trail while in Moab.

Just disappointed about the Country Boy Mine, because I feel that would be such a different experience, but I just don't see how we'd be able to be in Breckenridge on anything but a Saturday.

I am getting more and more excited about this trip everyday! As I knew would happen, the trip is continually being transformed by everyone's suggestions and comments, and is becoming more and more wonderful. I can barely wait until we leave!

emalloy Mar 4th, 2015 10:43 AM

I think this is the museum WhereAre We was thinking of

https://www.museumofwesternco.com/vi...m-of-the-west/

We haven't been there but it sounds good.

WhereAreWe Mar 4th, 2015 12:20 PM

Emalloy, that is the one I was thinking of. I haven't been to it either, I just drive by on the way to CO National Monument. There is also a short hike nearby that leads to the site where a large dinosaur fossil was excavated.

Gretchen Mar 4th, 2015 03:36 PM

The place near Denver is Dinosaur Ridge and Morrison, but they are going directly to DIA now. It is south, but not far.
This has become very crammed IMO. I'm signing off.

alwaysafrica Mar 4th, 2015 04:44 PM

Gretchen, I thank you so much for all of your ideas and suggestions!!!

Although it does seem a little busy at the end right now, it will definitely pair down as we look into things. For example, the Country Boy Mine is closed and so that's off the table. We will check out the various ideas about dinosaur exhibits and narrow it down to the one that we think will be best.

Also, I think that since we now know the Mine is closed, we may decide to spend two nights in Telluride/Ouray and then two nights in Glenwood Springs (and skip the night in Breckenridge) - to cut down on some of the moving around.

Google Maps says that it's 2 hours and 41 minutes from Glenwood Springs to Denver. Does this sound about right? We need to be precise of course, since we'll need to be on time for our flight : )

Gretchen Mar 5th, 2015 02:53 AM

You are going to DIA which is on the other side of Denver but even then mapquest says about 3 hours. I would consider this absolutely the best time that could be made with no traffic--almost like being teleported!!
I don't know if I said it in this thread or another but we never allow less than 2 hours to get from the curb at DIA to our plane gate. It can be one of the busiest TSA mazes anywhere, and we have done it often.

alwaysafrica Mar 5th, 2015 03:54 AM

I had never heard that, so thank you for mentioning it! We will make sure to leave ourselves plenty of time then!

Virginia1990 Mar 5th, 2015 05:00 AM

Have you thought about seeing the Hoover Dam while in Vegas? Might be fun for the boys, my fiance went when he was younger and he loved it. Stills talks about it.

Check out the Devil's Garden Loop in Arches. A friend and I did that last summer, and this was a close second favorite to Delicate Arch for us. It should be fun for boys that like to climb on all the rocks. And you can make it as long as you want.

Check out Emerald Pools in Zion. Not too strenuous a hike, but should be fun. I've done Angel's Landing and most of the Narrows, but don't recommend Angel's Landing for the young boys and I'm not sure of the status of the Narrows in May. We did it in July. But you can look it up or call ahead to see. The Narrows might be fun for the boys for a shorter distance, but I would absolutely recommend renting the boots and a walking stick. Also, make sure you go the eastern side of the park and visit Zion Mountain Ranch. Can be a quick visit, but there is a buffalo herd there that I'm sure your young boys would love to see. Plus you would get to see the views on that side of the park as well.

Colorado - Make sure you do Cliff Palace and Balcony House tours in Mesa Verde. So much fun! I loved them! And the guides I've had were great and I actually enjoyed hearing about the history of the area.
If you do the Million Dollar Highway route, there is a little pull off called Lime Kiln something. We jumped in the waterfalls and did the rockslides in August, but in May the water will be much too high. But there is a little hike down into the canyon that might be fun. There's also a fantastic hike near Silverton, but probably not recommended for kids the age that you have. But I don't know how well your kids hike, so check it out and make your own decisions! It's called Ice Lakes, and I did it in July this past summer and was blown away. By far one of my favorite hikes I've ever done (probably second only to Angel's Landing.) I'm a VA girl though, and I haven't gotten to experience the alpine lakes and high mountains though :)
Telluride - possibly check out Bridal Veil Falls. And make sure to ride the tram, it's free and has great views.
Glenwood Springs - I haven't personally done this town yet, but we are doing it April and planning to do the Caverns and Hanging Lake hike. Just a suggestion to look into. I've heard Hanging Lake is strenuous due to elevation gain in a short distance. Also, the Maroon Bells aren't too terribly far from here (~1 hr from what I understand). But not sure if the roads will be open yet, something to look into.
Also, if you like wild game and want a nice (but expensive) dining experience, check out The Fort in Denver.

alwaysafrica Mar 5th, 2015 09:46 AM

Virginia1990, I really appreciate the time you took to send me all of that detail. It's awesome! I will most definitely check out all of your suggestions! We love hearing about people's personal favourites for hikes (rather than just the guidebooks)... you'll have to report back in about Glenwood Springs once you're back : )

SaltysMom Mar 5th, 2015 10:01 AM

So sorry to hear about the Country Boy Mine. An extra night in Glenwood isn't a bad idea tho because there are lots of kid-friendly things to do there. If you are bike riders, I would highly suggest renting some bikes and riding the bike path though Glenwood Canyon. It is breathtaking and an engineering marvel. There is also a great hike called "Hanging Lake" in the Canyon (probably 5 miles out of Glenwood Springs that your active boys would love. Not too long - but steep and very beautiful. A dip afterwards in the hot springs pool - perfection!!!

Gretchen Mar 5th, 2015 11:47 AM

Along with the bike path at Glenwood Canyon is a wonderful explanation of how that road was built.
And the suggestion of Hoover Dam is wonderful. We had a tour with the then superintendent (a friend's father) but any tour would be worthwhile.

alwaysafrica Mar 8th, 2015 11:30 AM

Hi all - just a weekend update of the plans we've now confirmed : )

Day 12 - drive the Million Dollar Highway and stay in Telluride (estimated time: realistically 4-5 hours). Maybe a late-afternoon short hike - 1mi Box Canyon Falls Trail? Also go see Bridal Veil Falls. Gondola ride to Mountain Village and then dinner in town. Overnight at a 2-BR condo unit at Riverside Condos in-town.

Day 13 - Big hiking day! Two big hikes - Blue Lake and Bear Creek Falls (about 4 hours each). Dinner in-town and nother overnight at Riverside Condos.

Day 14 - On the way to Glenwood Springs (4 hour drive), spend half a day at Black Canyon of the Gunnison (stopping at the overlooks, doing some short hikes). Spend late afternoon at the Hot Springs. Overnight in a suite at the Hotel Colorado (across the street from the hot springs).

Day 15 - Glenwood Adventure Park in the morning for the alpine coaster, cave tours and amusement fun. Afternoon - Hanging Lake Hike (1 mile). Evening back at the hot pools : ) Overnight again at the Hotel Colorado.

Day 16 - in the morning, drive the 2.5 hours into Denver. Have lunch and head straight to the airport to give ourselves lots of time. Need to be at the airport by 4:30pm (flight home at 6:30pm).

alwaysafrica Mar 11th, 2015 10:22 AM

Just found out that many things in Telluride are going to be closed during our dates - many restaurants, shops and even the gondola! Very nice of the condo owner to let me know these things before I booked. I'm wondering if there's anyone on here who has been to Telluride in this off-season (April-May (before Memorial Day)) that could tell me just how "closed down" the town really is? We don't mind it being slightly empty, but certainly want to be able to find decent places to eat : )

DebitNM Mar 11th, 2015 11:42 AM

I threw a random date - May 21 my birthday) - into opentable and got 11 out of their 14 listings available.

The gondola opens on that day too.

I don't know that you ever posted exact dates, your OP just says "MAY"

We lived in the area and have gone into Telluride during off season and have had dinner at restaurants. There will be places to eat before season starts, maybe more casual than the fancier/more foodie places.

There is bus service from Mountain Village to Telluride when the gondola doesn't run if you wanted to explore MV. Not sure if your condo is in Telluride proper or MV.

May 22-25 is the Telluride Film Festival, so that is why things open back up; it's the first of the monthly festivals in Telluride.

DebitNM Mar 11th, 2015 11:44 AM

I can't say for certain that all of these will be open, but many should be open.

http://www.telluride.com/things-do/value

alwaysafrica Mar 11th, 2015 11:59 AM

Thanks! We are going to be there in the middle of May and so the gondola definitely won't be open. A shame for sure! I think a lot of things will be closed until that exact date - May 21st - right before that festival... The condo we're renting is right in Telluride proper, so the advantage was to be able to walk to restaurants and the like. So long as some good restaurants are still open, the I guess it should be fine...

DebitNM Mar 11th, 2015 12:15 PM

I think you'll be fine with the restaurants. You are there just 2 nights right?

alwaysafrica Mar 11th, 2015 12:52 PM

Yup, just two nights. But we also like to have a decent selection, given my son's nut allergy and the need to be able to go to a different restaurant if the one we're in can't accommodate it. But so long as there are a handful that are open, we should be good to go. And one thing we know -- nature (and hiking) are always available : )

annalynn Mar 13th, 2015 12:14 PM

I realize you've already booked your Mesa Verde hotel, but I'm planning a similar trip for my family of two boys and had come across the Holiday Inn Express in Cortez, which, yes, is a Holiday Inn, and won't have the views that Far View will have, but they have these themed family suites where the kids get their own bunk beds in a "fort" and it might be a bigger hit with them.

And please be sure and let us know how your trip goes - it sounds fantastic! We're making a circle loop to/from Vegas and going to the Grand Canyon before Mesa Verde and Durango and then over to the Utah parks and back to Vegas, but otherwise, I'm finding this thread very helpful\. :)

DebitNM Mar 13th, 2015 02:14 PM

The Holiday Inn Express in Cortez is a quite nice place to stay. Cortez is a fine little town to stay in when you can't get into Far View. Some good places to eat, a nice public library where you can use wifi for free or their computers, grocery stores, coffee shops etc.

There a nice park and indoor pools if the weather turns unpleasant.

alwaysafrica Mar 17th, 2015 08:08 AM

annalynn, it looks fantastic. We're really happy to be staying in the park, but otherwise, I think that the Holiday Inn looks great. What a fantastic idea to have the little forts (and my boys are dying to stay in bunk beds!). When are you planning your trip for?
